Consider<strong>in</strong>g French lea<strong>the</strong>r export, <strong>the</strong> data available for <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century<br />

shows how France became an important lea<strong>the</strong>r goods exporter only when its<br />

supply of <strong>in</strong>ternal raw lea<strong>the</strong>r started <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g (fig. 1.4). We will see <strong>in</strong> chapters 6<br />

<strong>and</strong> 7 how France started from <strong>the</strong> 1830s to export <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g quantities of shoes,<br />

but also how <strong>the</strong>se shoes were ma<strong>in</strong>ly made of silk. It was only after 1850 that<br />

France acquired an important role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational lea<strong>the</strong>r market.<br />
