urban retailers. 9 It is not uncommon to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> account books money given <strong>in</strong><br />

advance to 'codonnier petit' <strong>in</strong> order to allow <strong>the</strong>m to buy lea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> produce<br />

footwear on commission.'° One particular <strong>in</strong>ventory before death reveals an<br />

<strong>in</strong>sight that could be missed simply look<strong>in</strong>g at figures. Pierre Raymond Tisson, a<br />

shoemaker <strong>in</strong> rue de Capuc<strong>in</strong>nes had <strong>in</strong> 1827 <strong>in</strong> his shop several hundred pairs of<br />

shoes <strong>and</strong> boots, as well as lea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> fabrics. His bus<strong>in</strong>ess was recorded <strong>in</strong> a<br />

daily book, a book of m<strong>in</strong>utes <strong>and</strong> a book for employees <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r accounts. It<br />

was surely a smart shop with a central location. <strong>The</strong> most <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g detail is<br />

that all <strong>the</strong> goods were <strong>in</strong>dividually priced, a fact observed by <strong>the</strong> compiler of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ventory who assumed goods to be worth what <strong>in</strong>dicated."<br />

Although <strong>the</strong>se cases report <strong>the</strong> most dynamic examples <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> trade, an<br />

analysis of <strong>the</strong> acts of bankruptcy at <strong>the</strong> Archive de <strong>Paris</strong>, shows how <strong>the</strong><br />

retail<strong>in</strong>g structure of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Paris</strong>ian shoe trade was at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong><br />

n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century still fairly traditional. Retail<strong>in</strong>g was dom<strong>in</strong>ated by a series of<br />

small shops, buy<strong>in</strong>g lea<strong>the</strong>r to produce shoes or buy<strong>in</strong>g small stocks of ready-<br />

made footwear from local producers. In most cases <strong>the</strong> fixed asset was very<br />

small compared with <strong>the</strong> circulat<strong>in</strong>g capital. Heck, a march<strong>and</strong> cordonnier <strong>in</strong> rue<br />

du Temple had <strong>in</strong> 1807 not more than 160 francs worth <strong>in</strong> stock <strong>and</strong> furniture but<br />

debts of more than 2,000 francs.' 2 It was only at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth<br />

century that cordonniers <strong>and</strong> march<strong>and</strong>s were becom<strong>in</strong>g separate branches <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

trade:<br />
