However, <strong>the</strong> centrality of <strong>Paris</strong> was used with flexibility, allow<strong>in</strong>g prov<strong>in</strong>cial<br />

lea<strong>the</strong>r producers to sell directly to curriers <strong>in</strong> <strong>Paris</strong> without send<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir lea<strong>the</strong>r to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Halle aux Cuirs. In <strong>the</strong> same way, <strong>the</strong>re were big shoemakers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> capital who<br />

had permanent contacts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> country to supply <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong> lea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y<br />

needed. 32 Only well <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century did <strong>Paris</strong> become also a lea<strong>the</strong>r-<br />

produc<strong>in</strong>g centre. In 1840 it was reported that "<strong>Paris</strong> est le centre naturel de<br />

l'<strong>in</strong>dustrie du tanneur; son énorme approvisionnement y amènè, de toutes les<br />

parties de la France, les boeufs de la plus belle especès, qui fournissent les<br />

meilleures peaux". 33 It has also to be po<strong>in</strong>ted out that this new importance of <strong>Paris</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lea<strong>the</strong>r market did not oppose local specialisation. <strong>The</strong> marroqu<strong>in</strong>, for<br />

<strong>in</strong>stance, although produced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole of France, was a particular product of<br />

Ruën lea<strong>the</strong>r dressers.34<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r two elements are essential <strong>in</strong> a basic analysis of <strong>the</strong> lea<strong>the</strong>r sector:<br />

quantities <strong>and</strong> prices. <strong>The</strong> analysis of <strong>the</strong> transactions that took place at <strong>the</strong> 'Bureau<br />

de Cuir', one of <strong>the</strong> two <strong>Paris</strong>ian lea<strong>the</strong>r markets, allows us to see <strong>the</strong> proportion of<br />

different k<strong>in</strong>ds of lea<strong>the</strong>r sold. More than half was ox <strong>and</strong> cow lea<strong>the</strong>r, normally<br />

tanned; ano<strong>the</strong>r 20 per cent was of o<strong>the</strong>r k<strong>in</strong>ds of animal tanned lea<strong>the</strong>r. F<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

dressed lea<strong>the</strong>r accounted for about 10 per cent, <strong>and</strong> sheepsk<strong>in</strong>s for 6 per cent<br />

(table 1.6). As far as prices are concerned, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mid-eighteenth century <strong>the</strong>re was<br />

a general compla<strong>in</strong>t about <strong>the</strong> high cost of lea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>. 35 Prices were more<br />

stable <strong>in</strong> France, although with <strong>the</strong> Revolution <strong>the</strong>re was a sudden <strong>in</strong>crease. In<br />

1788 tanned lea<strong>the</strong>r cost <strong>in</strong> France from 8 to 9 sols per pound <strong>and</strong> tawed lea<strong>the</strong>r<br />

cost around 6 sols per pound. In 1793 tanned lea<strong>the</strong>r cost 21 sols per pound <strong>and</strong><br />

tawed lea<strong>the</strong>r cost 13 sols per pound.36<br />
