Competition, 1815-1850<br />

"Le Commerce et 1 'Industrie ne peuvent se développer qu 'a l'abri de l'ordre et de lois;<br />

les guerres, les gr<strong>and</strong>es commotions arrêtent leur essor".<br />

6.1 Introduction<br />

Emile Pereire, A messieurs le membres de la Commission.. <strong>Paris</strong>, 1830.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century <strong>the</strong> <strong>London</strong> shoemak<strong>in</strong>g trade was<br />

no longer <strong>the</strong> unquestioned leader <strong>in</strong> Europe. This position - achieved <strong>and</strong><br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> eighteenth century - was challenged by <strong>the</strong> rise of <strong>Paris</strong> as<br />

a new <strong>and</strong> dynamic European shoemak<strong>in</strong>g centre. 1 <strong>The</strong> French revolution<br />

provided new cultural <strong>and</strong> material stimula that <strong>in</strong>fluenced fashion <strong>and</strong> had a<br />

considerable impact on footwear. Notwithst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> climate of political<br />

uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty dom<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g France, <strong>Paris</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed - <strong>and</strong> perhaps even<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>ned - its role as city of taste <strong>and</strong> fashion. <strong>The</strong> geographical<br />

complementarity between <strong>the</strong> production of new political, philosophical <strong>and</strong><br />

social ideas <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> creation of new mode <strong>in</strong> cloth<strong>in</strong>g, objects <strong>and</strong> decor, created<br />

a series of opportunities for <strong>the</strong> flower<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Paris</strong>ian consumers' trades. This<br />

chapter aims to analyse <strong>the</strong> relationship between <strong>the</strong> <strong>Paris</strong>ian <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>London</strong><br />

shoemak<strong>in</strong>g trades dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> first half of <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century.<br />

While <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eighteenth century <strong>London</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Paris</strong> were two separate but<br />

ra<strong>the</strong>r similar pre-<strong>in</strong>dustrial shoemak<strong>in</strong>g centres, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century a<br />

divergence between <strong>the</strong> two came <strong>in</strong>to existence. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>novations that quickly<br />

changed products <strong>and</strong> producers <strong>in</strong> <strong>Paris</strong> had a relevant impact on <strong>the</strong> <strong>London</strong><br />

trade itself. It is <strong>the</strong>refore necessary to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> economic transformations<br />

that set <strong>London</strong> <strong>in</strong> direct competition with <strong>Paris</strong>. Start<strong>in</strong>g with an exam<strong>in</strong>ation of<br />
