pair of man's double soled lea<strong>the</strong>r shoes. Journeymen thought this was a major<br />

obstacle <strong>in</strong> jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Company. A master was required to show skills <strong>in</strong> all<br />

three sub-trades <strong>in</strong> which shoemak<strong>in</strong>g was divided (men's, women's <strong>and</strong> boots)<br />

while, accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>m, "la paire de bottes est un ouvrage et la paire de<br />

souliers un autre". 85 <strong>The</strong> result was a dw<strong>in</strong>dl<strong>in</strong>g number of master shoemakers<br />

<strong>in</strong> most French cities <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Paris</strong> <strong>in</strong> particular.<br />

In <strong>London</strong> <strong>the</strong> Company had accepted <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g specialised production, not<br />

expect<strong>in</strong>g masters to produce <strong>the</strong> whole spectrum of products. In <strong>Paris</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

company promoted not only <strong>the</strong> preservation of small productive units, but also<br />

of generic producers. This restra<strong>in</strong>ed on <strong>the</strong> development of subcontract<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> separation of production from retail<strong>in</strong>g. We can perhaps say that <strong>the</strong><br />

Compagnie was less representative of shoemakers than <strong>the</strong> Cordwa<strong>in</strong>ers'<br />

company <strong>in</strong> <strong>London</strong>. <strong>The</strong> Compagnie had to deal not only with a certa<strong>in</strong> number<br />

of <strong>in</strong>dividuals who did not respect <strong>the</strong> rules, but also with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> company it had<br />

to deal with "l'esprit d'<strong>in</strong>subord<strong>in</strong>ation et d'<strong>in</strong>dépendence de la plus gr<strong>and</strong>e<br />

partie des maitres". Such <strong>in</strong>subord<strong>in</strong>ation manifested itself with producers who<br />

"n'ont po<strong>in</strong>t rempli les temps d'apprentisage prescrit" or <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r who<br />

"s'accoutument a une fabriquation ricieuse, d'autres se servent des<br />

march<strong>and</strong>ises defectiienses ou prohibées et endonnent par ce moyen leur<br />

ouvrage a plus bas prix". <strong>The</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al op<strong>in</strong>ion was that "de ce esprit<br />

d'<strong>in</strong>dépendance de la part des maitres, Résulte la désobeissance de Rociunaitre<br />

les loix constitutives de 1 'existence de leur Communauté".86<br />

As <strong>the</strong> efforts to reta<strong>in</strong> control of craftsmen suggest, both <strong>the</strong> <strong>London</strong><br />

Cordwa<strong>in</strong>ers' company <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Paris</strong>ian Compagnie des Cordonniers were<br />

concerned with shap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> dimensions of <strong>the</strong> trade to avoid its dis<strong>in</strong>tegration<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s of thous<strong>and</strong>s of unregulated, legal or semi-legal producers,<br />

result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> higher competition <strong>in</strong> a market <strong>in</strong> which profit marg<strong>in</strong>s were already<br />
