The pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> this came with his practice. Willson worked on several medieval<br />

churches, restor<strong>in</strong>g and largely reconstruct<strong>in</strong>g a number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m with great tact, notably<br />

Holy Tr<strong>in</strong>ity Mess<strong>in</strong>gham <strong>in</strong> 1817-18 and St <strong>Mary</strong> Ha<strong>in</strong>ton, both <strong>in</strong> L<strong>in</strong>colnshire, where<br />

he worked <strong>in</strong> 1846-7 and where he chose eventually to be buried. Where possible he<br />

<strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> older fabric with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new. In his own build<strong>in</strong>gs he was<br />

able, at least once, to realise a piece <strong>of</strong> modern Gothic developed straight from <strong>the</strong><br />

Examples. The first subject <strong>in</strong> Volume Two, which was published, after much delay, <strong>in</strong><br />

1836 Willson hav<strong>in</strong>g taken five years to produce <strong>the</strong> text, was <strong>the</strong> Slipper Chapel at<br />

Houghton <strong>in</strong> Norfolk [fig: 17]. This small build<strong>in</strong>g, dat<strong>in</strong>g, as Willson knew, from <strong>the</strong><br />

mid-fourteenth century was ru<strong>in</strong>ous <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1830s hav<strong>in</strong>g been converted at one po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong>to<br />

a cottage and <strong>the</strong>n used as a barn. Willson wrote with someth<strong>in</strong>g approach<strong>in</strong>g tenderness<br />

about <strong>the</strong> ‘curious little fabric’ with its ‘beautiful west w<strong>in</strong>dow…<strong>the</strong> ramifications <strong>of</strong> its<br />

mullions be<strong>in</strong>g adjusted very gracefully’. 145<br />
