11.6.4 Financial and Physical Progress
The Rural Electrification Corporation has, upto the end of January, 1998 sanctioned a
total of 32,118 schemes involving financial outlay of Rs.13645 crore covering
electrification 3.23 lakh villages and energisation of 66.55 lakh agricultural pumpsets.
The cumulative funds disbursement upto January, 1998 is about Rs.10074 crore. In
terms of achievements, REC schemes have resulted in electrification of nearly 2.98
lakh villages and energisation of 69.9 lakh pumpsets in the country.
During the fiscal year 1997-98, REC has disbursed nearly Rs.1100 crore to various
State Electricity Boards and Power Departments under its various programmes. In terms
of physical progress, during the period April 1997 - February 1998 the SEBs are reported
to have electrified 1640 villages and energised 1.97 lakh pumpsets.
Tribal Sub-Plan and Special Component Plan 1997-98
In keeping with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Welfare/Planning Commission,
out of the budgetary support of Rs.348 crore for Normal programme and Rs.175 crore
for Minimum Needs Programme allocated under the Annual Plan of REC for 1997-98,
REC made provision of Rs.48 crore under Tribal Sub-Plan and Rs.87 crore under Special
Component Plan for taking up electrification of 500 Tribal villages and 2100 Dalit
Bastis for up-liftment of the weaker sections of the society in rural areas. Upto the end
of January 1998, some of the SEBs/Power Departments covered under these programmes
are reported to have electrified 112 tribal villages and 1798 Dalit Bastis.
11.6.5 Performance during 1997-98
The performance of Rural Electrification Corporation for the fiscal year 1997-98 based
on financial, economic and other parameters has been evaluated and the results show
that the performance of the Corporation is likely to be rated ‘Excellent’.
