• To secure protection from economic hazards beyond their control; for example,<br />

illness, accident, death, disability, unemployment and old age;<br />

• To get along with their fellow-workers in a better way and to gain respect in<br />

the eyes <strong>of</strong> their peers; and<br />

• To get a job through the good <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> a trade union.<br />

Plants get unionized for three reasons <strong>–</strong> dissatisfaction, lack <strong>of</strong> power and union<br />

instrumentality. Dissatisfied employees seek union membership to improve work situation.<br />

Employees believe unionization fetch them power. Power, in turn, is believed to remove<br />

dissatisfaction. Employees take unions as instruments to remove dissatisfaction.<br />

In general, the expectation that work will satisfy personal preferences induces<br />

satisfaction or dissatisfaction with work. As the level <strong>of</strong> dissatisfaction increases,<br />

individual workers seek to change their work situation. If they fail, and if the positive<br />

consequences <strong>of</strong> unionization seem to outweigh the negative ones, individual workers will<br />

be inclined to join the union.<br />

TYPES OF TRADE UNION<br />

Trade unions may be classified in various ways<br />

• Business unions<br />

It is that emphasis upon the economic advantages to be bargained through<br />

collective action and thus aim at improving the wages, working hours and<br />

conditions <strong>of</strong> workers and similar other objectives largely through the process <strong>of</strong><br />

collective bargaining.<br />

• Predatory unions<br />

It is that serve as a means for the enrichment <strong>of</strong> its leaders who pay only secondary<br />

attention to the advancement <strong>of</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> members. It distinctive characteristic is<br />

the ruthless pursuit <strong>of</strong> the target by whatever means deemed appropriate at the time<br />

regardless <strong>of</strong> ethical or legal codes or effect upon those outside its own<br />

membership. Such a union may employ any <strong>of</strong> the business, friendly, revolutionary<br />

or violent methods for the achievement <strong>of</strong> its objectives.<br />

• Dependant or company unions
