FEATURES OF COLLECTIVE BARGAINING<br />

The main features <strong>of</strong> collective bargaining are:<br />

GROUP ACTIVITY<br />

Collective bargaining is a group activity because the parties involved in the bargaining<br />

process represent different groups<br />

ACTIVITY LEVELS<br />

There are different levels in the process <strong>of</strong> collective bargaining. Starting with a simple<br />

bipartite discussion between the management and the employees at unit/ plant level, it can<br />

proceed to industry/ national level.<br />

FLEXIBILITY<br />

Collective bargaining aims at a mutually agreeable and favorable solution to the problems<br />

between the management and the employees. Thus, flexibility, in ideas and opinions,<br />

demands and requests, and decisions and agreements is the chief characteristic <strong>of</strong> the<br />

collective bargaining process.<br />

WIN- WIN SITUATION<br />

The agreements <strong>of</strong> collective bargaining are based on the principle <strong>of</strong> mutual interest. All<br />

the parties involved should have win-min attitude and aim at reaching an agreement that is<br />

in the best interests <strong>of</strong> all parties<br />

BUILDS RELATIONSHIPS<br />

Collective bargaining, as a continuous process, helps in building a culture <strong>of</strong> strong<br />

relationships between the management and the employees (trade unions). This helps in<br />

developing a conflict / dispute <strong>–</strong>free industrial environment.<br />

<strong>AN</strong> ART <strong>AN</strong>D A SCIENCE<br />

An expert at collective bargaining is someone who has practiced the art well. It is also a<br />

science because understanding the process <strong>of</strong> collective bargaining and predicting the<br />

response <strong>of</strong> the other party as accurately as possible can help in better negotiation and<br />

enhanced performance in achieving the desired results.<br />
