who remained with him until 1869. After that date he continued the<br />

ship ch<strong>and</strong>lery business alone, at the old st<strong>and</strong> on Water street, until<br />

1877, when he sold out <strong>and</strong> took an office on South Main street,<br />

next to <strong>his</strong> residence, the Joseph Tillinghast homestead, at the southwest<br />

corner of James street, where he remained until <strong>his</strong> death. Mr.<br />

<strong>Earle</strong> was genial <strong>and</strong> social with <strong>his</strong> friends, but he was eminently<br />

a. just man, who could be <strong>and</strong> was trusted, <strong>and</strong> whose opinions had<br />

weight in business circles. He was a member of the R. I. Historical<br />

Society, Vice-President of the Marine Society, &c, of the Common<br />

Council from 1847 to 1852, <strong>and</strong> Alderman from 1859 to 1862;<br />

he also had the management of several estates.<br />
