April 21, 1797 : " Died at Westport, on the 15 th inst., William Earl,<br />

in the 88 th year of <strong>his</strong> age ; a worthy, respectable farmer, <strong>and</strong> with<br />

truth can be said to have been ' an honest man—the noblest work of<br />

God !<br />

He resided near the head of Westport river, in that part of Dartmouth<br />

which was during <strong>his</strong> life set off as Westport. After <strong>his</strong><br />

decease <strong>his</strong> farm, containing about 200 acres, was divided into four<br />

parts, <strong>and</strong> owned, in i860, by Willard Slocum, <strong>his</strong> house being near<br />

the site of the old homestead, Canaan Dyer, Restcome Manchester<br />

<strong>and</strong> Stephen Cornell. William's house was a fine specimen of the<br />

best rural architecture of the time.<br />

went to Westport, Mass., <strong>and</strong> lived in the neighborhood of <strong>his</strong><br />

brother William, near the head of Westport river.<br />
