<strong>Earle</strong>, b. Nov. 11, 1826, in Champion, N. Y. ; m. Nov.<br />

12, 1851, Sarah, dau. of Noah C. <strong>and</strong> Sally Ann (Gilmore)<br />

Williams, of Hermon, N. Y. He was a merchant<br />

in Edwards, N. Y., but removed in i860 to Hermon,<br />

where he continued in the same business, <strong>and</strong> d. Feb. 5,<br />

1877.<br />

He was commemorated by the subjoined obituary, in a newspaper<br />

at Hermon :<br />

"<strong>The</strong> death of Otis <strong>Earle</strong>, Esq., took place at <strong>his</strong> residence in t<strong>his</strong><br />

village at an early hour Monday morning, Feb. 5th. His disease was<br />

pneumonia, brought on, in part, it is believed, by <strong>his</strong> over-exertion<br />

at the burning of Mr. Van Atter's house, a week before <strong>his</strong> death.<br />

He passed away calmly <strong>and</strong> peacefully.<br />

His funeral was attended on Wednesday, by Rev. Dr. J. S. Lee,<br />

of Canton, assisted by Rev. J. H. McCullough, of t<strong>his</strong> village. It is<br />

estimated that nearly a thous<strong>and</strong> persons were present during the<br />

services, though many could not get into the church, which was<br />

crowded to its utmost capacity. <strong>The</strong> Freemasons, accompanied by<br />

the b<strong>and</strong>, whose instruments were draped in mourning, were present<br />

from Canton, Russell, Edwards, Richville, Gouverneur <strong>and</strong> Hermon,<br />

175 in number, <strong>and</strong> they conducted the solemn <strong>and</strong> impressive service<br />

of the Order at the grave, through their representatives, Rev. Mr.<br />

McCullough <strong>and</strong> Hon. D. S. Lynde.<br />

Mr. <strong>Earle</strong> was a resident of t<strong>his</strong> village fifteen years, having previously<br />

done business in partnership with J. B. Pickett, Esq., in<br />

Edwards, for more than ten years. Peace to <strong>his</strong> memory." ,<br />
