continued active in promoting the interests of the Revolution.<br />

Capt. Southgate engaged extensively in purchasing wild l<strong>and</strong>s in<br />

Maine. After the death of <strong>his</strong> oldest son he had occasion to visit<br />

these l<strong>and</strong>s from time to time, to dispose of them <strong>and</strong> to protect them<br />

from trespassers. On the 7th August, 1806, having occasion to be<br />

at Stillwater for t<strong>his</strong> purpose, <strong>and</strong> wishing to pass a short distance<br />

down the river, he got upon a couple of logs in the stream, <strong>and</strong> was<br />

soon after thrown into the water in some way, <strong>and</strong> was drowned.<br />

His body was soon recovered <strong>and</strong> buried at Kenduskeag Point, on<br />

the banks of the Penobscot.<br />

while engaged in <strong>his</strong> work, which was that of a gunsmith, "fell<br />

<strong>and</strong> died almost instantly," probably from a disease of the heart.
