Philology <strong>and</strong> Literature. In March, 1875, he was promoted to the<br />

Presidency of the College. In 1878, Harvard University conferred<br />

upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, <strong>and</strong> in 18S0,<br />

Haverford College gave him the degree of Doctor of Literature.<br />

He spent the summer vacation of 1883 in travel, with <strong>his</strong> daughter,<br />

in Europe; <strong>and</strong> made an extensive European tour with <strong>his</strong> <strong>family</strong>,<br />

in 1886 <strong>and</strong> 1887, having resigned <strong>his</strong> collegiate office. He is now<br />

devoting himself to literary pursuits.<br />

In consequence of <strong>his</strong> proficiency in the Greek language, he was<br />

appointed a member of the New Testament company of the Ameri-<br />

can Committee for the revision of the translation of the Bihle.<br />

Besides various review articles, essays, orations on Goethe <strong>and</strong><br />

Schiller, Lincoln, <strong>and</strong> Whittier, <strong>and</strong> educational addresses, he has<br />

published an account of <strong>his</strong> travels in Greece, under the title,<br />

"Hellas, her Monuments <strong>and</strong> Scenery"; also editions of Cicero's<br />

Tusculan Disputations, Virgil, Horace, Livy <strong>and</strong> Juvenal, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

Latin Grammar, all of which are widely used as text-books.<br />

Charles Augustus Chase [1906-5], after preparation in the<br />

public schools of Worcester, entered Harvard University in 185 1,<br />

was graduated in course, in 1S55, anc^ received the degree of Master<br />

of Arts in 1858.<br />

He was a member of the editorial staff of the Boston Daily Adver-<br />

tiser from September, 1S55, to April, 1S62, when he made a tour of<br />

five months in Europe <strong>and</strong> returned to settle in Worcester. He was<br />

elected Treasurer of the County of Worcester to succeed <strong>his</strong> father,<br />

<strong>and</strong> held the office eleven years, from January, 1S65, to January,<br />

1S76. He was also Register of Deeds for the same county, for the<br />

year 1876. In November, 1879, ne was chosen Treasurer of the<br />

Worcester County Institution for Savings, one of the oldest institu-<br />

tions of the kind in the State, <strong>and</strong> now holds that office. For several<br />

years prior to t<strong>his</strong> appointment he had been one of the trustees of<br />

the institution. He is a member of the Council, as well as of the<br />

Committee of Publication, of the American Antiquarian Society, <strong>and</strong><br />

a member of the Worcester Society of Antiquity.<br />
