Earl, b. Dec. 31, 1794, in Westport, Mass. ; removed<br />

with her father to Galway, N. Y. ; m. Jan. 4, 1814,<br />

Edwin Potter (/;. March 26, 1791 ; d. Feb. 13, 1863),<br />

the son of a revolutionary soldier. She is still living in<br />

Belleville, Jefferson Co., N. Y., is one of the few surviv-<br />

ing widows whose husb<strong>and</strong>s served in the war of 181 2,<br />

<strong>and</strong> draws a pension from the government.<br />

" <strong>The</strong> Potter <strong>family</strong> ranked among the well-to-do people of Ellisburgh.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were farmers, <strong>and</strong> were independent. In-doors, every<br />

nook <strong>and</strong> corner were kept in order. Regularity pervaded everything.<br />

In the morning at the appointed hour the hush of silence<br />

settled upon animated life. Every member of the <strong>family</strong> <strong>and</strong> the<br />

stranger within its gates were awed to stillness ; then the worthy son<br />

of the brave old revolutionary sire would read a chapter from the<br />

Bible, after which all would kneel in prayer. In the evening before<br />

retiring to rest, the same observance of the divine <strong>and</strong> common law<br />

was held."<br />
