<strong>The</strong>re is reason for the belief that Abbott <strong>Earle</strong>, who m. Oct. 30,<br />

1791, Hannah Burr; <strong>and</strong> Nancy <strong>Earle</strong>, who m. Sept. 1, 1793,<br />

Shubael Cady, all of Providence, R. I., were also children of David<br />

<strong>and</strong> Abigail; <strong>and</strong> that Abigail, then a widow, was living <strong>and</strong><br />

"keeping house" in Providence, between 1790 <strong>and</strong> 1800.<br />

R. I. ; m. May 8, 1766, Dorcas (d. Dec. 27, 1827), dau.<br />

of Jacob <strong>and</strong> Dorcas Barney, resided in Newport ; d. May<br />

20, 1816, in Smithfield, R. I. His children were born in<br />

Newport, with the exception of Jacob Barney, who was<br />

born in Mendon, Mass.<br />

In the language of a letter written nearly thirty years ago, " John<br />

was born a sailor, <strong>and</strong> cared as little for money, although entirely<br />

free from sailors' vices. During the Revolution he sent <strong>his</strong> <strong>family</strong> to<br />

Mendon, Mass. He was taken by a British cruiser, <strong>and</strong> wrote to<br />

<strong>his</strong> wife. <strong>The</strong> letter was opened <strong>and</strong> read at a public house, <strong>and</strong><br />
