1840, William E. (d. Nov. 18, 1858), son of Isaac <strong>and</strong><br />

Anna (Estes) Hacker, of Salem, Mass. ; lived in Phila-<br />

delphia, Pa., <strong>and</strong> d. May 23, 1846.<br />

In 1 83 1 she succeeded her sister Sarah [871-4] as Principal of the<br />

Mulberry Grove Boarding School, in Leicester, <strong>and</strong> conducted it<br />

successfully until 1839, when it was discontinued <strong>and</strong> she removed to<br />

Philadelphia. She had much literary taste, which was rendered<br />

more acute <strong>and</strong> discriminating by extensive reading ; <strong>and</strong> held a<br />

facile pen, through which, <strong>and</strong> over the signature Ada, she con-<br />

tributed many articles to the publications of the day. A large pro-<br />

portion of these were poetical pieces written in promotion of the<br />

anti-slavery cause, in which she took a lively interest. Many of<br />

these appeared in the Massachusetts Spy <strong>and</strong> the Pennsylvania<br />

Freeman.<br />
