I were<br />

Benjamin Buffum <strong>his</strong> lumber business, the yard <strong>and</strong> office of which<br />

on the north side of Washington Square, nearly opposite the<br />

Union Depot. He continued in t<strong>his</strong> business until 1865, <strong>and</strong> soon<br />

afterward, accompanied by <strong>his</strong> son Edward, he spent about eighteen<br />

months in Europe. After <strong>his</strong> return he purchased the interest of <strong>his</strong><br />

half-brother, Edward, in the T. K. <strong>Earle</strong> & Co.'s card manufactory,<br />

<strong>and</strong> retained it until <strong>his</strong> decease.<br />

In the late civil war he held the commission of Lieutenant in Capt.<br />

Pickett's Company of the 25th Regiment of Mass. Volunteers, <strong>and</strong><br />

was at the taking of Newbern, N. C. He was a member of the<br />

School Committee of Worcester, for several years; <strong>and</strong> in 1870 a<br />

member of the House of Representatives of the State Legislature.<br />

<strong>The</strong> children of Thomas <strong>and</strong> Alice (Chase) <strong>Earle</strong> were:<br />

1955-1. Edward <strong>Earle</strong>, b. Oct. 29, 1851 ; d. unm., Oct. 16,<br />

1879, in Bradford, Pa. <strong>The</strong> Bradford Star said of<br />

him : "In morals <strong>and</strong> integrity in business <strong>his</strong> example<br />

was worthy of emulation by all <strong>his</strong> associates."<br />

1956-2. Philip H. <strong>Earle</strong>, b. April 20, 1854; d. March 14, 1872,<br />

in Worcester.<br />

1957-3. Ellen C. <strong>Earle</strong>, b. Oct. 29, 1857; m. Oct. 25, 1882,<br />

Arthur A., son of Nicholas A. <strong>and</strong> Sarah I. (Stevens)<br />

Clarke, of Springfield, Mass., <strong>and</strong> lives in Salem, Mass. ;<br />

1 ch., Alice C, b. Nov. 29, 18S3.<br />

1887, in Worcester.<br />

Brown, of East Baldwin, Me. ; issue, 1 ch. ; lived<br />

in Worcester, Mass., <strong>and</strong> d. April 7, 1868.<br />

Oliver K. studied at the same institutions as <strong>his</strong> elder brothers,<br />

completing <strong>his</strong> education at the Friends' School in Providence, <strong>and</strong>,<br />

like them, lived with <strong>his</strong> parents upon the farm which <strong>his</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>father,<br />

Robert <strong>Earle</strong>, Jr. [174-8], gave to <strong>his</strong> youngest son, Timothy
