April 2, 1845, in Westport, Vt. ; m. Sept. 27, 1871,<br />

Fanny L. Bundy (b. May 24, 1847), <strong>and</strong> lives in Chicago.<br />

His father went from Vermont in 1854 <strong>and</strong> settled in Lake County,<br />

111., where he engaged in farming,—the subject of t<strong>his</strong> sketch assist-<br />

ing him during the summer months, <strong>and</strong> attending school in winter.<br />

In 1S61 he enlisted in the 15th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, <strong>and</strong><br />

served under General Fremont, in the Missouri campaign, until the<br />

fall of that year, when he was discharged from the service, on<br />

account of disabilities incurred while unloading a transport on the<br />

Missouri river. In the fall of 1862 he enlisted in the 96th Illinois<br />

Volunteer Infantry, <strong>and</strong> <strong>his</strong> military record is given as follows in the<br />

<strong>his</strong>tory of that regiment, published in 1886 :<br />

sergeant upon the organization of the company ; promoted second<br />

lieutenant February 16, 1863, before he was eighteen; <strong>and</strong> first<br />

lieutenant August 12, 1864. Was a prisoner of war from September<br />

22, 1863, to February 9, 1864, <strong>and</strong> escaped from Libby Prison, Richmond,<br />

Va., by tunneling. Was twice slightly wounded at Chickamauga,<br />

while in comm<strong>and</strong> of <strong>his</strong> company, <strong>and</strong> was especially com-<br />
