), dau. of Joshua <strong>and</strong> Rebecca (Sherman)<br />

<strong>Earle</strong>, b. July 23, 1772, in Dartmouth, now Westport,<br />

Mass. ; m. in 1797, John (b. July 27, 1769; d. Feb,<br />

24, 1854), son of William <strong>and</strong> Patience (Dyer) Howard,<br />

of Providence, R. I.<br />

John Howard lived for a few years at Pittstown, N. Y., <strong>and</strong> then<br />

six or more at Addison, Vt., as a farmer ; went to Burlington in<br />

181 2, <strong>and</strong> established the Howard Hotel which he kept for the next<br />

thirty-five years of <strong>his</strong> life. No man was more prompt, or would go<br />

farther, to do a kindly act to a neighbor or any person in distress<br />

than " Uncle John" as he was familiarly <strong>and</strong> affectionately called by<br />

the many who knew <strong>his</strong> good qualities. His wife was a very<br />

estimable lady, <strong>and</strong> lived to the age of 93 years, retaining to a<br />

remarkable degree her faculties of mind <strong>and</strong> body. She died in<br />

1865, in Burlington, bearing to her grave the love <strong>and</strong> esteem of all<br />
