of William Young <strong>and</strong> Amelia (Adams) <strong>Earle</strong>, b. Sept.<br />

30, 1819, in Chester, Windsor Co., Vt. ; removed with<br />

<strong>his</strong> fathers <strong>family</strong> to Ohio; m. Feb. 24, 1845, Emily,<br />

dau. of Isaac <strong>and</strong> Polly (Clevel<strong>and</strong>) Russell, of East<br />

Liberty, Ohio.<br />

In April, 1839, when still a minor, <strong>and</strong> living with <strong>his</strong> father's<br />

<strong>family</strong> in Ohio, he went, with consent of parents, to Iowa, then a<br />

Territory, <strong>and</strong> settled in Jackson County. In the autumn of 1840, a<br />

few days after <strong>his</strong> arrival at the age of twenty-one years, he was<br />

elected Superintendent of Schools for the County. In 1S44, he<br />

returned to Ohio, <strong>and</strong> taught a school during the winter months.<br />

Early in the following year he married, soon returned to Iowa <strong>and</strong><br />

settled in Dubuque County, where he was elected Superintendent of<br />

Schools, <strong>and</strong>, subsequently, Justice of the Peace. In 1S50 he went by<br />

the Panama route to the gold regions of California, remained there a<br />

year, returned to Iowa, again settled in Jackson County, at Richl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> was elected Justice of the Peace <strong>and</strong> Assessor. "I never asked<br />

for an office in my life," he stated to one of <strong>his</strong> friends, " <strong>and</strong> I never<br />

was defeated when run."<br />

In 1865, he removed to Missouri ; in 1874, to Southern California<br />

in 1878, again to Missouri; <strong>and</strong> finally, in 1882, again to California;<br />

— "t<strong>his</strong> time to stay." He settled in Los Angeles County, first at<br />
