Upon the maternal side Matthew M. Earl is descended from the<br />

old Palatines who settled in <strong>and</strong> subdued the valley of the upper<br />

Hudson <strong>and</strong> the Mohawk river. He received a common school<br />

education, with the addition of one year each at the academies at<br />

Whitehall, Washington Co., N. Y., <strong>and</strong> Belleville, Jefferson Co.,<br />

N. Y. With the exception of about two years devoted to life<br />

insurance work, he has been engaged, since he attained <strong>his</strong> majority,<br />

in the banking business,—first, for about three years, in the city of<br />

New York, <strong>and</strong> afterward, until the present time, in the office of <strong>his</strong><br />

uncle, Oren R. Earl, in S<strong>and</strong>y Creek, N. Y., where he is cashier.<br />

He is much interested in the subject of education, <strong>and</strong> has for<br />

nearly ten years been a member of the Board of Education in charge
