He went to Brattleboro in 1787 <strong>and</strong> was one of the early settlers of<br />

the west part of the town. He bought the farm owned in 1 886 by<br />

Mellen Goodenough, <strong>and</strong> lived there in an old log house until 1793,<br />

when he built the frame house which is occupied by the present<br />

owner. He was a very hard-working man. In the latter years of<br />

<strong>his</strong> life he partially lost the use of <strong>his</strong> limbs so that he walked with a<br />

long staff, but so anxious was he to work that he had leather fastened<br />

to <strong>his</strong> pantaloons so that he could weed the garden working on <strong>his</strong><br />

knees. He lived <strong>and</strong> died upon the farm where he settled, <strong>and</strong><br />

where <strong>his</strong> son Samuel afterward lived.<br />

He owned <strong>and</strong> lived many years upon what is now the "Town<br />

Farm " in Leicester.<br />
