Melinda <strong>Earle</strong> (Nye) Ch<strong>and</strong>ler, of Springfield, Mass.*<br />

),<br />

son of Robert <strong>and</strong> Mary (Newhall) <strong>Earle</strong>, b. Feb. 10,<br />

1741, in Leicester, Mass.; m. in 1762, Mehitable Snow,<br />

of Leicester (who d. in 1810, in Champion, N. Y.). At<br />

the time of <strong>his</strong> marriage, he lived in Rutl<strong>and</strong>, Mass-<br />

afterward in Leicester; then removed, in 176401- 1765,<br />

to Chester, Vt., <strong>and</strong> subsequently, but before 1777, to<br />

Chesterfield, Vt., <strong>and</strong> about 1804, to Champion, Jeffer-<br />

. son Co., N. Y., where he died Oct. 24, 1823.<br />

He was one of the pioneers in the settlement of the country, <strong>and</strong>,<br />

as a writer says of him, "loved hunting <strong>and</strong> trapping, <strong>and</strong> made<br />

traps with which he caught a great number of wolves, bears <strong>and</strong><br />

panthers."<br />

fashionable in <strong>his</strong> time; <strong>and</strong> in the back-ground there is a view of <strong>his</strong> resi-<br />

dence, with the row of Sycamores in front.
