In the late civil war he enlisted, May 1, 1861, for three years, <strong>and</strong><br />

was mustered on the 12th of July next following, as private in the<br />

15th Regiment, Co. F, Mass. Vols. He was in the battle of Ball's<br />

Bluff", Oct. 21, 1861 ; was wounded in that of Antietam, Sept. 17,<br />

1862 ; <strong>and</strong> was afterward in those of Fredericksburg, Dec. 13, 1862,<br />

<strong>and</strong> May 3, 1863, <strong>and</strong> Gettysburg, July 2 <strong>and</strong> 3, 1863. He was<br />

promoted to Sergeant, July 24, 1862 ; to 1st Sergeant, Sept. 20,<br />

1862 ; to 2d Lieutentant, Jan. 8, 1863 ; to 1st Lieutenant, April 17,<br />

1863 ; <strong>and</strong> to Captain of Company A, Sept. 9, 1863. He was discharged<br />

at the expiration of service, as Captain of Company F, July<br />

28, 1864.<br />

In 1867 he was appointed Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue<br />

for the Eighth original District of Massachusetts, <strong>and</strong> held the position<br />

four years. In 1871 he received the appointment of Deputy<br />

Sheriff <strong>and</strong> has continued in that office until the present time, with<br />

the exception of about two years, during which he was Warden of<br />

the State prison, at Concord, Massachusetts.<br />
