Oliver, <strong>and</strong> in 1721, sold die other half to him for £1,100. He had<br />

then returned to Portsmouth. He died at <strong>his</strong> homestead in War-<br />

wick, R. I.<br />

His will was executed in Warwick, April 27, 1727, <strong>and</strong> <strong>his</strong> wife<br />

Mary was executrix. Inventory, £669. 19s. id.<br />

Tiverton, R. I., <strong>and</strong> d. Aug. 12, 1759. <strong>The</strong>y were<br />

married by Joseph Church, Esq.<br />

Richard Sherman, for thirty years Town Clerk of Portsmouth,<br />

says (185S) that "in 1714, John Earl's dwelling house stood a few<br />

rods south of the site of the hotel erected a few years ago at Bristol<br />

ferry."<br />

It appears by the records of Portsmouth, that John acted upon<br />

coroner's juries in 1697, 1705 <strong>and</strong> 1712.<br />

In 17H' the town of Portsmouth granted to him, in consideration<br />

of twenty-four shillings, twelve acres of the common l<strong>and</strong>s.
