Linking System<br />

The feature used to link the executable elements needed to execute an extended mode<br />

program.<br />

local mass storage<br />

The set of disk devices that are accessible only to one host in a multihost environment.<br />

For single-host environments, the only option is to use local mass storage.<br />

mass storage<br />

The disk or tape devices used to store information. Disks are the most common type of<br />

mass storage device. See also fixed mass storage, removable mass storage.<br />

master file directory (MFD)<br />

A directory maintained by the Exec to control cataloged files. The MFD contains the<br />

security attributes, look-up entries, <strong>and</strong> directory items needed to maintain cataloged<br />

files. Files listed in the master file directory are cataloged <strong>and</strong> retained after a run ends.<br />

The message h<strong>and</strong>ler for extended mode TIP programs <strong>and</strong>, optionally, for basic mode<br />

TIP programs. MCB provides message recovery <strong>and</strong> is intended as the replacement for<br />

COMPOOL.<br />

Multi-Host File Sharing (MHFS)<br />

A separately packaged feature of the <strong>OS</strong> <strong>2200</strong> Exec that allows multiple hosts in a<br />

system to access shared mass storage devices. The MHFS feature associates Exec files<br />

with a local MFD or a shared MFD <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>les the interhost communications necessary<br />

to deal with Exec file sharing across multiple hosts. This feature is needed in multiple<br />

host systems. See also Extended Transaction Capacity, Partitioned Applications.<br />

multiple initialization<br />

A type of program logic that allows the current copy of a TIP program to be kept ready<br />

for new scheduling requests. This type of program logic is often called multiple INITAL.<br />

O<br />

offline<br />

The state of a transaction program when it is not accessible to end users. The TIP file<br />

containing the transaction program must be brought online before users can access it.<br />
