Linking System
The feature used to link the executable elements needed to execute an extended mode
program.
local mass storage
The set of disk devices that are accessible only to one host in a multihost environment.
For single-host environments, the only option is to use local mass storage.

mass storage
The disk or tape devices used to store information. Disks are the most common type of
mass storage device. See also fixed mass storage, removable mass storage.
master file directory (MFD)
A directory maintained by the Exec to control cataloged files. The MFD contains the
security attributes, look-up entries, and directory items needed to maintain cataloged
files. Files listed in the master file directory are cataloged and retained after a run ends.
MCB
See Message Control Bank (MCB).
Message Control Bank (MCB)
The message handler for extended mode TIP programs and, optionally, for basic mode
TIP programs. MCB provides message recovery and is intended as the replacement for
COMPOOL.

Multi-Host File Sharing (MHFS)
A separately packaged feature of the OS 2200 Exec that allows multiple hosts in a
system to access shared mass storage devices. The MHFS feature associates Exec files
with a local MFD or a shared MFD and handles the interhost communications necessary
to deal with Exec file sharing across multiple hosts. This feature is needed in multiple
host systems. See also Extended Transaction Capacity, Partitioned Applications.
multiple initialization
A type of program logic that allows the current copy of a TIP program to be kept ready
for new scheduling requests. This type of program logic is often called multiple INITAL.
O
offline
The state of a transaction program when it is not accessible to end users. The TIP file
containing the transaction program must be brought online before users can access it.
