divide the ranks of the Kurdish revolution.<br />

As for the government of Tahir Yahia, which was<br />

formed in the aftermath of the 5th of June War between<br />

the Arabs <strong>and</strong> Israel, it declared in speeches the intention<br />

to carry out the agreement of 29 June. However, in<br />

reality, it carried on as all other Iraqi governments to<br />

impede any attempts for agreement.<br />

On 17 July 1968 the Baath Party carried out another<br />

military coup <strong>and</strong> removed Abdulrahman Arif from the<br />

power, <strong>and</strong> appointed Ahmad Hassan Al-Bakir as the<br />

ruler of Iraq.<br />

After failing in resolving the Kurdish question in Iraq<br />

militarily, <strong>and</strong> failing also in wavering the unity of the<br />

ranks of the <strong>Kurds</strong>, the Baathist government issued the<br />

declaration of 11th March 1970, which included awarding<br />

the Kurdish people the autonomy after a transitional period<br />

of four years – such a long period for the implementation<br />

of the autonomy was in reality a clear sign for the evil<br />

intentions of the Iraqi government – in order to kill off<br />

the revolution by other ways, which included the attempt<br />

to assassinate the leader, Barzani, <strong>and</strong> thus throwing back<br />

the Kurdish cause to its starting point. That is why the<br />

government never started the implementation of the<br />

declaration <strong>and</strong> carried out successive conspiracies. All<br />

attempts to assassinate Mella Mustafa in Haji Omeran<br />

failed. As did the attempt to assassinate his son Idris in<br />

Baghdad. As soon as the transitional period expired the<br />

government forces were ready militarily, politically <strong>and</strong><br />

internationally to strike at the Kurdish revolution. On<br />

the other h<strong>and</strong> the government succeeded in achieving<br />

several of its aims by weakening the Kurdish revolution<br />
