Nairi <strong>and</strong> their descendants are still in prominence in the<br />

region between the two rivers, in the birthplace of the<br />

great patriot <strong>and</strong> revolutionary Sheikh Ubeidulah Al-<br />

Nahri. <strong>The</strong> Oriental scholar Major Soane says the<br />

following about Nairi in his book entitled: “To<br />

Mesopotamia <strong>and</strong> <strong>Kurdistan</strong> in disguise ” London 1912:<br />

“<strong>The</strong> Assyrian nation is the only nation that was able<br />

to penetrate into the l<strong>and</strong>s of the Nairi, the inhabitants of<br />

which were not any less passionate about their<br />

independence <strong>and</strong> any less inclined towards freedom than<br />

the present day Kurdish people. In fact, the total resistance<br />

to assimilation of this brave nation into the neighbouring<br />

superpowers completely stirs the imagination <strong>and</strong> creates<br />

total disbelief… <strong>The</strong> impression the Kurdish people have<br />

left on the historians <strong>and</strong> Orientalists is that a Kurd does<br />

not accept submission <strong>and</strong> humiliation. <strong>The</strong> Kurd cannot<br />

be suppressed <strong>and</strong> loves progress <strong>and</strong> innovation but will<br />

not give up an inch of his native l<strong>and</strong>. <strong>The</strong> Kurd has<br />

deep hatred towards the peoples <strong>and</strong> nations that conspire<br />

to govern his faith according to their own rules. Instead,<br />

he prefers to retreat to his mountains retaining his national<br />

dignity <strong>and</strong> preserving his ancient <strong>and</strong> pure Arian<br />

language”.<br />

6. <strong>The</strong> Medes: <strong>The</strong>se are an Indo-European people<br />

who lived in the North Western part of Iran in the l<strong>and</strong><br />

of the Medes since the ninth century BC. And who have<br />

conquered their neighbouring l<strong>and</strong>s gradually. At the end<br />

of the eighth century BC, they were able to establish an<br />

independent government <strong>and</strong> subject the neighbouring<br />

people of Parsai to their rule. <strong>The</strong>n they built the city of<br />
