Kurdish state would have been a certainty <strong>and</strong> the Soviets<br />

might have supported a Kurdish state more than their<br />

support to Vietnam. That is because of the strategic<br />

importance of <strong>Kurdistan</strong> <strong>and</strong> its proximity to them,<br />

allowing them access to the Arab World <strong>and</strong> Africa.<br />

However, the leadership of the KDP at the time were<br />

basing their policies on their party <strong>and</strong> regional interests<br />

only. This situation – i.e. narrow partisan interests <strong>and</strong><br />

regionalism – deprived the Kurdish people from taking<br />

advantage of the opportunities <strong>and</strong> instead of taking<br />

advantage of all those forces mentioned they ignited a<br />

revolution in Southern <strong>Kurdistan</strong>, putting the best sons<br />

of the Kurdish people in a huge risk. At the same time<br />

they tried to blame everything on Qasim once or the late<br />

Mella Mustafa Barzani on other occasions. In order for<br />

them to stay in power, they brainwashed the Kurdish<br />

people with notions, example of which are mentioned<br />

bellow:<br />

A.<strong>The</strong>y told the Kurdish people that the Soviet Union<br />

would never support any military close to their borders,<br />

which later proved wrong by the Soviets' support to<br />

Afghanistan.<br />

B.<strong>The</strong>y never recognized the existence of part of<br />

<strong>Kurdistan</strong> within the borders of the Soviet Union, <strong>and</strong><br />

that is why they never mentioned a word regarding the<br />

Red <strong>Kurdistan</strong> Republic established in Lenin times (1921)<br />

which lasted for nine years until 1930 when Stalin<br />

destroyed it <strong>and</strong> scattered its population over all the<br />

republics of the Soviet Union. All this for a studying<br />

grant or to keep their good relations with the Iraqi<br />

Communist Party.<br />

C.This faction not now <strong>and</strong> not ever believed in a<br />

Kurdish state saying as an excuse that the great powers<br />
