MAYORAL MINUTE
VALE REGINALD NELSON WALKER -
FATHER OF WEST PYMBLE
On <strong>be</strong>half <strong>of</strong> Ku-ring-gai Council, I would like <strong>to</strong> pay tribute <strong>to</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> Reginald Nelson
Walker, who passed away on the 10 July 2006 aged 87.
Reg is known <strong>to</strong> many in Ku-ring-gai as a distinguished former Ku-ring-gai Mayor and
Alderman.
He served as Mayor in 1962 and as an Alderman from 1950 <strong>to</strong> 1965, having lived in West
Pymble since 1946.
Ex-Alderman Walker had a great passion for heritage and conservation and was able <strong>to</strong>
bring this <strong>to</strong> his career as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional public administra<strong>to</strong>r.
He served in a num<strong>be</strong>r <strong>of</strong> senior positions with the National Trust <strong>of</strong> Australia, where he was
Chief Executive Officer from 1963 <strong>to</strong> 1974.
He also served as General Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Australian Council <strong>of</strong> National Trusts and was an
executive mem<strong>be</strong>r <strong>of</strong> the Australian Conservation Foundation.
Reg was committed <strong>to</strong> finding the right balance <strong>be</strong>tween development and conservation –
and he brought this commitment <strong>to</strong> his role as an alderman and mayor.
He was a true campaigner for conservation <strong>of</strong> both the natural and built environments in
Ku-ring-gai.
In this Centenary year for Ku-ring-gai Council, we honour those aldermen and <strong>council</strong>lors
over the past 100 years who have maintained Ku-ring-gai’s special character.
Without this continuous protection <strong>of</strong> our tree canopy and unique urban bushland setting,
Ku-ring-gai would <strong>be</strong> a very different place <strong>to</strong>day.
Without doubt, Reg Walker played a major role in this with his vast experience and
expertise in the areas <strong>of</strong> heritage and conservation. His work in these areas led <strong>to</strong> him <strong>be</strong>ing
made a Mem<strong>be</strong>r <strong>of</strong> the Order <strong>of</strong> Australia.
Reg was also a great supporter <strong>of</strong> local government and a <strong>be</strong>liever in its power <strong>to</strong> shape and
create sustainable and thriving local communities.
