Item 1<br />

13 July <strong>2006</strong><br />

MAYORAL MINUTE<br />

VALE REGINALD NELSON WALKER -<br />

FATHER OF WEST PYMBLE<br />

On <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>half <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ku-ring-gai Council, I would like <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> pay tribute <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the life <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Reginald Nels<strong>on</strong><br />

Walker, who passed away <strong>on</strong> the 10 July <strong>2006</strong> aged 87.<br />

Reg is known <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> many in Ku-ring-gai as a distinguished former Ku-ring-gai Mayor and<br />

Alderman.<br />

He served as Mayor in 1962 and as an Alderman from 1950 <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1965, having lived in West<br />

Pymble since 1946.<br />

Ex-Alderman Walker had a great passi<strong>on</strong> for heritage and c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> and was able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

bring this <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> his career as a pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essi<strong>on</strong>al public administra<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r.<br />

He served in a num<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> senior positi<strong>on</strong>s with the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Trust <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Australia, where he was<br />

Chief Executive Officer from 1963 <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1974.<br />

He also served as General Secretary <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Australian Council <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Trusts and was an<br />

executive mem<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Australian C<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> Foundati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Reg was committed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> finding the right balance <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>tween development and c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> –<br />

and he brought this commitment <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> his role as an alderman and mayor.<br />

He was a true campaigner for c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> both the natural and built envir<strong>on</strong>ments in<br />

Ku-ring-gai.<br />

In this Centenary year for Ku-ring-gai Council, we h<strong>on</strong>our those aldermen and <str<strong>on</strong>g>council</str<strong>on</strong>g>lors<br />

over the past 100 years who have maintained Ku-ring-gai’s special character.<br />

Without this c<strong>on</strong>tinuous protecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our tree canopy and unique urban bushland setting,<br />

Ku-ring-gai would <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> a very different place <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>day.<br />

Without doubt, Reg Walker played a major role in this with his vast experience and<br />

expertise in the areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> heritage and c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>. His work in these areas led <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> him <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing<br />

made a Mem<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Order <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Australia.<br />

Reg was also a great supporter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> local government and a <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>liever in its power <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> shape and<br />

create sustainable and thriving local communities.<br />
