Encroachments, noxious weeds and dumping<br />

Following the approval <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Levy, Council has <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>en able <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> employ<br />

two Community Envir<strong>on</strong>ment Officers <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> help mediate issues at the resident/ bushland<br />

interface by providing a link <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>tween Council and the wider Community. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers<br />

commenced in February <strong>2006</strong> with activities initially focusing in North Wahro<strong>on</strong>ga <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

ensure residents retain all structures and garden landscapes within their property<br />

boundaries. This will assist the creati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a new fire protecti<strong>on</strong> break and the<br />

extensi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kokoda Memorial Walking Trail.<br />

Other issues relating <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> noxious weeds and refuse dumping in bushland are also <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing<br />

addressed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> prevent the degradati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> natural areas. A variety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> community<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> materials are <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing developed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> assist Council in c<strong>on</strong>veying the importance<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> protecting local bushland including an informati<strong>on</strong> postcard that will <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> sent <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> all<br />

residents surrounding bush regenerati<strong>on</strong> sites and other locati<strong>on</strong>s where<br />

Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Levy activities are <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing undertaken.<br />

The Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden<br />

KPI – Identify opportunities, particularly for seniors, <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> promote recreati<strong>on</strong>al use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

bushland areas including Ku-ring-gai Wildflower garden.<br />

The Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden is a bushland reserve set <strong>on</strong> 124 hectares. Within<br />

the Garden is a Council operated Bushland Educati<strong>on</strong> Centre that is the focus <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a<br />

range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>mental educti<strong>on</strong> programs.<br />

During the 2005/06, year the Bushland Educati<strong>on</strong> Centre had over 200 activities with<br />

close <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> 5000 people participating in our programs (participati<strong>on</strong> figures based <strong>on</strong> July<br />

2005 <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> April <strong>2006</strong>).<br />

Make C<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>s – this school excursi<strong>on</strong> program is based <strong>on</strong> urban bushland<br />

themes <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> compliment the Department <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Educati<strong>on</strong> curriculum. Students directly<br />

experience the natural world with hands-<strong>on</strong> activities. The emphasis is <strong>on</strong> discovery,<br />

active learning and fun. 26 schools with 1162 students have participated this year.<br />

People in Parks – a school holiday program that is <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fered throughout the year. The<br />

activities are designed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> rec<strong>on</strong>nect children and their parents with the natural world<br />

and encourage a love <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nature. There have <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>en forty-seven activities with 1156<br />

participants.<br />

Nature for the very young – a pre-school program designed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> introduce <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ddlers,<br />

pre-schoolers and their carers <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the natural world in a tactile, hands-<strong>on</strong> manner with<br />

stroller friendly bush walks, activities and s<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>ries. Thirteen activities with 310<br />

participants have attended this year.<br />

Bush Birthday Parties – <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fering children age 4 – 12 years a birthday program that is<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>al, fun and a positive experience with the natural world. There has <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>en 119<br />

birthdays with 1725 participants this year.<br />

Habitat Ku-ring-gai – senior’s bushwalks within the Garden. The program includes<br />

a gentle walk and talk <strong>on</strong> native plants and animals and morning or afterno<strong>on</strong> tea.<br />

Four events were <str<strong>on</strong>g>held</str<strong>on</strong>g> with seventy participants taking part.<br />
