Fire management Council’s fire management program has included a range <strong>of</strong> initiatives incorporating hazard reduction burns, managing our fire breaks and trails and commencing the review <strong>of</strong> the bush fire prone lands map. Fire Trails The fire trail program, like the fire break program, facilitates access in<strong>to</strong> bushland. To this end Council has established and maintains 40 kilometres <strong>of</strong> fire trails. Recently, the St Johns Avenue <strong>to</strong> Vale Street fire trail was upgraded. The 1.6 kilometre works included, straightening and widening <strong>of</strong> the trail, rock armouring <strong>of</strong> batters as well as drainage and resurfacing works. Thus far, the project has <strong>be</strong>en running for thirteen weeks with the contract work now complete, and minimal work by Council required <strong>to</strong> finish the project. As well as the upgrade and maintenance program, a survey in currently underway <strong>to</strong> establish the feasibility <strong>of</strong> another 4.5 kilometres <strong>of</strong> fire trail network. This survey covers the area <strong>of</strong> bushland <strong>be</strong>tween North Wahroonga and North Turramurra. Fire Breaks KPI – Report on extensions <strong>to</strong> fire breaks at the urban/bushland interface. Fire breaks, do not as their name implies, s<strong>to</strong>p bushfires. Instead, they provide a fuel free platform where fire fighting personnel can gain safe access <strong>to</strong> bushland adjoining residential properties. They are an integral part <strong>of</strong> an integrated bushfire management strategy. Prior <strong>to</strong> the commencement <strong>of</strong> the 2005 – 2006 financial years, Ku-ring-gai Council had established and maintained 21.5 kilometres <strong>of</strong> fire breaks. These breaks have <strong>be</strong>en located on the bushland/ urban interface in areas <strong>of</strong> extreme, very high and high bushfire risk. Recently, Council was awarded funding through the Natural Disaster Mitigation Program. This funding, a combined Federal and State initiative, allowed the establishment <strong>of</strong> two further fire breaks on west facing slopes in St Ives. Combined, these additions increase the overall Fire Break Maintenance Program <strong>to</strong> 24.3 kilometres. Another 1.6km <strong>of</strong> fire break is in the planning stages for the West Pymble area. This break is <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> funded from the Environmental Levy. Once established, this will bring the <strong>to</strong>tal length <strong>of</strong> fire breaks within the LGA <strong>to</strong> 26.2 kilometres. Hazard reduction burning Bushfire hazard reduction burns are undertaken in accordance with the Hornsby/ Ku-ring-gai District Fuel Management Plan under the guidance <strong>of</strong> the fuel management committee. The burns are designed <strong>to</strong> manage the fire risks associated with the build up <strong>of</strong> fuels most notably when they exceed 25 <strong>to</strong>nnes per hectare. The basis for the undertaking <strong>of</strong> works is based on a 5 tier priority basis (1 high - 4 low, 5 Ecological burns). The following burns have <strong>be</strong>en undertaken this financial year: Priority 1 Craig St, St Ives - 14.06ha Caleys, Nth Wahroonga - 229.49ha Gwydir Ave, Nth Turramurra - 0.32ha Palm St, St Ives - 10.40ha Carlyle Rd (stg1), East Lindfield - 4ha Total hectares = 258.27 Priority 2 Bell St, Gordon - 1.41ha Total hectares = 1.41 Priority 3 Athena Av, St Ives - 0.32ha Solander Close, Turramurra - 0.40ha Burns Rd, Nth Turramurra - 1.60ha Mil<strong>to</strong>n Ave, Nth Turramurra - 0.52ha Kooloona Crescent, West Pymble- 3.67ha Burdekin Crescent, St Ives - 1.87ha Total hectares = 8.38 Priority 5 (Special categories – Ecological burns only) Wildflower gardens, St Ives - 5.97ha Total hectares = 5.97 The <strong>to</strong>tal num<strong>be</strong>r <strong>of</strong> pile burns undertaken since July exceeds 80. This activity is designed <strong>to</strong> reduce the fire risk following clearing and weed control most typically in areas that are either are difficult <strong>to</strong> remove vegetation, where disposal costs would <strong>be</strong> excessive or where it is desirable <strong>to</strong> burn for ecological reasons. As part <strong>of</strong> the bushfire hazard reduction program it is necessary <strong>to</strong> prepare sites <strong>to</strong> provide a safe working environment and where possible treat weeds <strong>to</strong> promote a more healthy ecological response post burn.
