Hazard reducti<strong>on</strong> burning<br />

Bushfire hazard reducti<strong>on</strong> burns are undertaken in accordance with the Hornsby/<br />

Ku-ring-gai District Fuel Management Plan under the guidance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the fuel<br />

management committee. The burns are designed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> manage the fire risks associated<br />

with the build up <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fuels most notably when they exceed 25 <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>nnes per hectare. The<br />

basis for the undertaking <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> works is based <strong>on</strong> a 5 tier priority basis (1 high - 4 low, 5<br />

Ecological burns). The following burns have <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>en undertaken this financial year:<br />

Craig St, St Ives - 14.06ha<br />

Caleys, Nth Wahro<strong>on</strong>ga - 229.49ha<br />

Gwydir Ave, Nth Turramurra - 0.32ha<br />

Palm St, St Ives - 10.40ha<br />

Carlyle Rd (stg1), East Lindfield - 4ha<br />

Total hectares = 258.27<br />

Priority 2<br />

Bell St, Gord<strong>on</strong> - 1.41ha<br />

Total hectares = 1.41<br />

Priority 3<br />

Athena Av, St Ives - 0.32ha<br />

Solander Close, Turramurra - 0.40ha<br />

Burns Rd, Nth Turramurra - 1.60ha<br />

Mil<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>n Ave, Nth Turramurra - 0.52ha<br />

Koolo<strong>on</strong>a Crescent, West Pymble- 3.67ha<br />

Burdekin Crescent, St Ives - 1.87ha<br />

Total hectares = 8.38<br />

Priority 5 (Special categories – Ecological burns <strong>on</strong>ly)<br />

Wildflower gardens, St Ives - 5.97ha<br />

Total hectares = 5.97<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>tal num<str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> pile burns undertaken since July exceeds 80. This activity is<br />

designed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> reduce the fire risk following clearing and weed c<strong>on</strong>trol most typically in<br />

areas that are either are difficult <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> remove vegetati<strong>on</strong>, where disposal costs would <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

excessive or where it is desirable <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> burn for ecological reas<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

As part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the bushfire hazard reducti<strong>on</strong> program it is necessary <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> prepare sites <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

provide a safe working envir<strong>on</strong>ment and where possible treat weeds <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> promote a<br />

more healthy ecological resp<strong>on</strong>se post burn. Sites prepared for burning by category<br />
