BACKGROUND<br />

Ku-ring-gai Council has mainitained childhood immunisati<strong>on</strong> clinics <strong>on</strong> a m<strong>on</strong>thly basis over many<br />

years, operating both a morning and evening clinic <strong>on</strong> the third Wednesday <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each m<strong>on</strong>th. The<br />

commencement date <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> these clinincs is not known, however, a search <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Council records reveals<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>nel immunisati<strong>on</strong> records extending back <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the 1950s.<br />

Additi<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the m<strong>on</strong>thly clinics , special clinics have also <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>en c<strong>on</strong>ducted from time <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> time in<br />

c<strong>on</strong>juncti<strong>on</strong> with programmes developed by the Department <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Health such as the nati<strong>on</strong>al Measles<br />

and Mumps campaign that targetted all children , including school age children in a catch up<br />

programme.<br />

Service provisi<strong>on</strong><br />

Initially, Council provided immunisati<strong>on</strong> against Poliomyelitis , Dipteheria, Tetnus and Whooping<br />

Clinic attendance rates<br />

Immunisati<strong>on</strong> clinics have generally <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>en satisfac<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rily attended in recent years. However, in<br />

general terms there has <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g>en a shift. In years past, it was normal for up <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> 120 children <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> attend,<br />

however in recent years m<strong>on</strong>thly attendance is averaging at around 50 per m<strong>on</strong>th. Some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this<br />

trend is attributed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> demographics, but some must also <str<strong>on</strong>g>be</str<strong>on</strong>g> attributed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the preferred choice <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

parents <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> take their children <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> a private doc<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> their own choosing. Latest census data reveals<br />

5,387 Children under 5 years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age live in Ku-ring-gai. 392 are clients <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>council</str<strong>on</strong>g>'s immunisati<strong>on</strong><br />

service (7%)<br />

It is worthy <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> note that the mid morning clinic is the most popular, with 615 appointments as<br />

opposed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> 123 appointments for the evening clinic in 2005<br />
