Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec)<br />
The Centre for Applied Ocean Technology (CTec), located at the<br />
Holyrood <strong>Marine</strong> Base, is the applied research arm of the School<br />
of Ocean Technology. It’s primary goals are to:<br />
• Undertake pre-commercial, applied research <strong>and</strong> development<br />
in response to the needs of the key ocean industries identified<br />
in the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s Vision 20/20 plan.<br />
• Where possible <strong>and</strong> practical, work corroboratively with the<br />
ocean technology community in Newfoundl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Labrador<br />
• Provide work experience <strong>and</strong> employment opportunities for<br />
students <strong>and</strong> graduates of SOT programs<br />
Activities within CTec are primarily focused in four key<br />
areas - ocean mapping, ocean observing systems, ocean<br />
instrumentation <strong>and</strong> underwater intervention.<br />
DIVISION OF ACADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS<br />
<strong>Academic</strong> <strong>and</strong> Student Affairs includes the Dr. C.R. Barrett<br />
Library, Student Affairs <strong>and</strong> teaching <strong>and</strong> learning services. The<br />
details of most of the services offered within the division are<br />
provided within the section of the calendar describing on-campus<br />
services.<br />
The Dr. C. R. Barrett Library collection supports study <strong>and</strong><br />
research in fisheries <strong>and</strong> aquaculture, marine technologies,<br />
nautical science, <strong>and</strong> the ocean environment. The collection also<br />
includes significant holdings in engineering.<br />
The Office of the Registrar provides a variety of services to<br />
support the development of students at the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>,<br />
including program advising, admissions, <strong>and</strong> registration; grade<br />
h<strong>and</strong>ling <strong>and</strong> reporting; application of academic policies <strong>and</strong><br />
regulations; maintenance of student records; <strong>and</strong> coordination of<br />
graduation <strong>and</strong> certification activities.<br />
• Admissions Office works as a division of the Office of the<br />
Registrar to admit students to all <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> administered<br />
programs. The admissions office acts as the institute liaison<br />
with <strong>Memorial</strong>’s School of Graduate Studies <strong>and</strong> the provincial<br />
department of education.<br />
Student Affairs provides a variety of services for both current<br />
<strong>and</strong> prospective students. The department includes student<br />
recruitment, placement, recreation <strong>and</strong> fitness, as well as a<br />
variety of student support services.<br />
• The Office of Student Recruitment provides the link between<br />
the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>and</strong> prospective students, the office<br />
connects with key partners at the secondary, post-secondary<br />
<strong>and</strong> industry levels to ensure that a wide range of prospective<br />
students are knowledgeable about available programs. As<br />
well, the office coordinates the on-campus tour program <strong>and</strong> is<br />
actively involved in the transition of a prospective student to an<br />
applicant.<br />
• Placement Office co-ordinates student work term employment<br />
in various programs offered by the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />
• Recreation <strong>and</strong> Wellness Office is responsible for coordinating<br />
fitness, recreational <strong>and</strong> wellness activities for students <strong>and</strong><br />
staff.<br />
• Student Support Services These services include but are<br />
not limited to: coordinating various student orientations,<br />
accommodating students with disabilities, <strong>and</strong> assisting<br />
students address general academic <strong>and</strong> financial issues. This<br />
unit also provides referrals to specialized services available<br />
on-campus at the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, St. John’s main campus of<br />
<strong>Memorial</strong> University <strong>and</strong> in the community.<br />
Teaching <strong>and</strong> Learning Services offer services in support of<br />
on-campus <strong>and</strong> online program <strong>and</strong> course development <strong>and</strong><br />
redevelopment activities within each of the three schools of the<br />
<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />
CORPORATE SERVICES AND EXTERNAL<br />
AFFAIRS<br />
The Division of Corporate Services <strong>and</strong> External Affairs provides<br />
organizational <strong>and</strong> business development services in support of<br />
the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s Schools, Centers <strong>and</strong> Units. The division<br />
includes:<br />
Finance <strong>and</strong> Contract Administration which provides financial<br />
<strong>and</strong> contract administration support for the <strong>Institute</strong> including,<br />
accounting <strong>and</strong> purchasing services.<br />
Facilities <strong>and</strong> Technical Services which manages <strong>and</strong><br />
maintains the <strong>Institute</strong>’s facilities, provides transportation, mail,<br />
receiving <strong>and</strong> printing services, <strong>and</strong> oversees new construction.<br />
<strong>Marine</strong> Services which manages <strong>and</strong> maintains the <strong>Institute</strong>’s<br />
marine bases <strong>and</strong> operates the research <strong>and</strong> training vessels.<br />
Human Resources which provides personnel <strong>and</strong> payroll<br />
services.<br />
Auxiliary Services (Cafeteria/Conference Catering/<br />
Bookstore) which provides meal services for students, caters<br />
to both meetings <strong>and</strong> conferences up to 250 delegates <strong>and</strong><br />
operates the <strong>Institute</strong>’s bookstore.<br />
Marketing <strong>and</strong> Communications oversees the <strong>Institute</strong>’s<br />
marketing, communications, conference planning, website<br />
management <strong>and</strong> publications such as The Bridge. They<br />
also provide expertise in graphic design, event management,<br />
promotional projects <strong>and</strong> web content development.<br />
Information <strong>and</strong> Communication Technologies provides<br />
support in the development <strong>and</strong> delivery of learning opportunities<br />
through various learning technologies <strong>and</strong> also provides<br />
integrated support for the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s net worked <strong>and</strong><br />
administrative computer systems.<br />
