ADVANCED DIPLOMA - INTEGRATED COASTAL AND<br />
OCEAN MANAGEMENT<br />
The <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Advanced Diploma in Integrated Coastal <strong>and</strong><br />
Ocean Management allows graduates of degree <strong>and</strong> diploma<br />
of technology programs to specialize in the multi-disciplinary<br />
elements associated with integrated coastal zone <strong>and</strong> ocean<br />
management. The program of study focuses on the bioecological,<br />
socio-economic, cultural <strong>and</strong> technological elements<br />
of coastal zone development <strong>and</strong> management.<br />
Graduates gain an integrated view of the issues <strong>and</strong> alternative<br />
solutions to the conflicts which may arise from multiple uses of<br />
coastal zones. They will be familiar with methods <strong>and</strong> tools for<br />
working with various constituents in the use <strong>and</strong> management<br />
of coastal zone <strong>and</strong> ocean areas. The focus is to support <strong>and</strong><br />
facilitate the sustainable development of these regions <strong>and</strong> the<br />
resolution of complex issues with decision makers, planning<br />
agencies, community agencies <strong>and</strong> other constituents.<br />
PROGRAM ENTRY:<br />
EVALUATION:<br />
Students in Advanced Diplomas must obtain a passing grade of<br />
65% or better in all program courses.<br />
Students who have received a grade of less than 50% in any<br />
course will be required to withdraw from the program.<br />
Students who have received a grade less than 65% (but 50% or<br />
greater) in more than one program course during a single term<br />
will be required to withdraw from the program.<br />
Students who have received a grade less than 65% (but 50%<br />
or greater) in one program course will be permitted to remain in<br />
the program, provided that course is retaken when offered <strong>and</strong><br />
passed with a grade of 65% or better. Only one such repeat will<br />
be permitted per term. Failure to obtain a grade of 65% in the<br />
repeated course shall lead to termination of a student’s program.<br />

PROGRAM STRUCTURE:<br />
The program has been structured in a four term format that will<br />
be delivered in 3 thirteen (13) week terms, <strong>and</strong> 1 six (6) week<br />
technical session.<br />
Term One (13 weeks):<br />
The first term is descriptive in nature, providing first a general<br />
overview of the elements <strong>and</strong> disciplines required for the<br />
management of the oceans <strong>and</strong> the coastal zones. Its aim is to<br />
st<strong>and</strong>ardize the background of the participants from different<br />
disciplines entering the program.<br />
The information provided will serve as the basis for further<br />
analysis <strong>and</strong> integration in the following terms.<br />
The first term includes a description of the ecological, human,<br />
<strong>and</strong> socioeconomic factors in coastal ecosystems <strong>and</strong> the<br />
methods <strong>and</strong> technologies utilized to implement management.<br />
Term Two (13 weeks):<br />
This term is analytical in nature, providing a review <strong>and</strong> critical<br />
analysis of multiple user conflicts <strong>and</strong> interdisciplinary subjects<br />
that interact in the oceans <strong>and</strong> the coastal zone. Increased<br />
emphasis is placed on legal <strong>and</strong> human aspects of coastal zone<br />
management <strong>and</strong> methods <strong>and</strong> technologies.<br />
Technical Session (6 weeks)<br />
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS<br />
The advanced diploma in integrated coastal <strong>and</strong> ocean<br />
management is designed to equip graduates with indepth<br />
knowledge <strong>and</strong> the practical skill necessary to be<br />
effectively involved in coastal zone management. Seminarbased<br />
teaching methods are used wherever appropriate.<br />
The program is designed to have an international focus<br />
<strong>and</strong> address topics of relevance to both developed <strong>and</strong><br />
developing nations. For this reason the program was<br />
developed in close consultation with international experts in<br />
coastal zone management. It is anticipated that a significant<br />
proportion of graduates will follow international employment<br />
opportunities.<br />
This session is designed to expose students to some of the<br />
physical applications available in the field of integrated coastal<br />
<strong>and</strong> ocean management.<br />
Work Term (13 weeks):<br />
The students will be placed in pertinent industries or agencies for<br />
practical work experience.<br />
