DIPLOMA OF TECHNOLOGY - NAUTICAL SCIENCE<br />

Sea Phases<br />

During the program, the cadet must accumulate a minimum<br />

of 12 months of recognized sea time in sea placements which<br />

have been approved by the <strong>Institute</strong> through the Placement<br />

Office. This is acquired through compulsory sea phase periods<br />

which are governed by the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> General Work Term<br />

Guidelines <strong>and</strong> the Nautical Science Work Term Regulations.<br />

These sea phases are, in fact, guided work terms for which<br />

accredited logbooks must be kept <strong>and</strong> the employers carry out<br />

personal evaluations of the cadets.<br />

The first sea phase (WKTM 1102) is scheduled over a two-month<br />

period between the end of the first technical session <strong>and</strong> the<br />

beginning of the following semester.<br />

Following the second Technical Session, the student commences<br />

the second sea phase (WKTM 2102). This is an extended<br />

period of 15 months wherein the student must accumulate the<br />

remainder of the required 12 months sea time.<br />

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS<br />

This program prepares graduates for a successful sea-going<br />

career as a ships’ officer. Transport Canada recognizes<br />

the professional competence of <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> graduates<br />

through the provision of exemptions for specific certification<br />

examinations. Graduates also have the option of pursuing<br />

further education.<br />

Transport Canada Certification<br />

• Subject to the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> general academic<br />

regulations governing graduation, graduates of the<br />

Diploma of Technology in Nautical Science having a<br />

cumulative average of 70% <strong>and</strong> an attendance rate of at<br />

least 90% in the program are eligible for exemptions from<br />

Transport Canada for specific examinations.<br />

• Transport Canada recognizes the benefits of education<br />

<strong>and</strong> training in marine transportation. The reality is that<br />

these benefits translate into a remission of sea service<br />

from Transport Canada for the time spent in school at<br />

the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>. In this case it is a full 24 months.<br />

Normally, seafarers applying to Transport Canada to sit<br />

for Watchkeeping Mate Certificate examinations would<br />

be required to have accumulated 36 months sea time.<br />

However, <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> graduates are required to<br />

accumulate only 12 months for the same certificate.<br />

• Consequently, eligible diploma graduates may apply to<br />

sit for their Transport Canada examinations in Navigation<br />

Safety <strong>and</strong> General Seamanship. If successful in<br />

passing these examinations, the cadets will receive<br />

their Watchkeeping Mate Certificate of Competence<br />

from Transport Canada. Transport Canada grants exam<br />

exemptions at various other certificate levels.<br />

• Several other combinations of qualifications for Transport<br />

Canada certification for the Canadian coastal trade <strong>and</strong><br />

offshore waters are possible through the diploma program.<br />

Students who are interested should contact the <strong>Marine</strong><br />

<strong>Institute</strong> School of Maritime Studies or Transport Canada<br />

for further details.<br />

• In addition to the certification opportunities described,<br />

graduates of the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Diploma of Technology in<br />

Nautical Science are eligible for admission to the <strong>Memorial</strong><br />

University Bachelor of Maritime Studies program. Upon<br />

completion of the diploma, c<strong>and</strong>idates are required<br />

to complete 13 additional courses for the Bachelor of<br />

Maritime Studies degree.<br />
