TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE - BRIDGE WATCH PROGRAM<br />

This eight month Technical Certificate Program is designed:<br />

• to prepare the student for employment in the merchant marine<br />

or fishing industry.<br />

• to provide the student with a basic underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the<br />

organization <strong>and</strong> structure found on a typical merchant marine<br />

or fishing vessel.<br />

• to develop <strong>and</strong> gain the knowledge <strong>and</strong> experience necessary<br />

to become part of a crew as found on any seagoing vessel.<br />

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS<br />

Applicants seeking entry to <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> programs which lead<br />

to Transport Canada Certification for Seafarer’s should note<br />

that Transport Canada requires proof of satisfactory physical<br />

fitness prior to eligibility for a Transport Canada Certificate of<br />

Competence. This includes satisfactory visual acuity, colour<br />

vision, <strong>and</strong> hearing among other physical requirements.<br />

These Programs include the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Diplomas of<br />

Technology in Nautical Science, <strong>Marine</strong> Engineering, the<br />

Vocational Certificate in <strong>Marine</strong> Diesel Mechanics <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Technical Certificate in Bridge Watch Program. Proof of physical<br />

fitness is also required for students to participate in STCW<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> Safety Training which is a compulsory part of these<br />

Programs.<br />

PROGRAM ENTRY<br />

PROGRAM STRUCTURE<br />

The overall objective of this program is to train students in the<br />

skills of seamanship so they will be employable in the marine<br />

industry.<br />

This program provides training <strong>and</strong> work experience to facilitate<br />

the transition of participants from school to the labour market,<br />

as well as offering a retraining opportunity. The design of this<br />

program includes the necessary academic skills training, as well<br />

as, the skills necessary to fill the position of deckh<strong>and</strong>. The many<br />

aspects of training in this program focus on preparing graduates<br />

to function <strong>and</strong> work confidently in the marine industry. The eight<br />

(8) month program is divided into two sections - Off-Site <strong>and</strong> On-<br />

Site training:<br />

• 16-weeks in-class instruction<br />

• 3-weeks <strong>Marine</strong> Safety Training<br />

• 60 days sea placement<br />

Students undertake h<strong>and</strong>s-on training where appropriate, using<br />

facilities in the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s rigging room, simulator, <strong>and</strong> its<br />

training vessel<br />

Proof of physical fitness must be provided by way of a signed<br />

medical from an approved physician. Signed Seafarer’s <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> medicals from an approved physician are<br />

required for admission to each respective program. The list of<br />

physicians approved to conduct either the Seafarer’s or STCW<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> Safety Training is available from the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong><br />

Office of the Registrar. Details of the physical requirements for<br />

the Seafarer’s Medical may be obtained from Transport Canada<br />

CAREERS<br />

• Graduates can expect to find employment in the marine industry aboard aboard cargo <strong>and</strong> passenger ships, supply vessels, oil<br />

tankers, <strong>and</strong> fishing vessels.<br />

• Employment in the allied marine industries may also be available.<br />

• This program may be especially useful to fisher persons who have been displaced due to a downturn in the fishing industry but who wish<br />

to upgrade <strong>and</strong> move into another aspect of the trade.<br />

• Upon successful completion of the program students are eligible to write the Bridge Watch Rating examination with Transport<br />

Canada.<br />
