ADMISSION TO THE MARINE INSTITUTE<br />

2.9 Joint Diploma/Degree Programs, Diplomas<br />

of Technology <strong>and</strong> Technician Diplomas<br />

The admission regulations below apply to all Joint Bachelor of<br />

Technology/Diploma of Technology programs <strong>and</strong> Diploma of<br />

Technology <strong>and</strong> Technician Diploma programs. C<strong>and</strong>idates for<br />

admission to these programs are required to have official copies<br />

of all high school <strong>and</strong> post-secondary education transcripts,<br />

submitted to the Registrar’s Office <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> by the issuing<br />

Institution.<br />

2.9.1 Newfoundl<strong>and</strong> Applicants<br />

Newfoundl<strong>and</strong> applicants seeking admission to any <strong>Marine</strong><br />

<strong>Institute</strong> Joint Diploma/Degree, Diploma of Technology or<br />

Technician Diploma program are required to have either a senior<br />

high school Level III Graduation Certificate; a grade 11 Public<br />

Examination Matriculation Certificate; a Level III Adult Basic<br />

Education (ABE) Certificate; or other qualifications amounting<br />

to high school equivalency judged by the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> to be<br />

equivalent to high school equivalency.<br />

High School Level III, Grade 11 or ABE graduates require the<br />

following for admission to a <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> diploma program:<br />

2.9.2 High School Graduates - Level III<br />

Applicants shall have completed Graduation Requirements<br />

for high school as set down by the Department of Education<br />

<strong>and</strong> obtained credits in each of the following, with a minimum<br />

combined average of 60% in the level three Mathematics, English<br />

<strong>and</strong> Science:<br />

Mathematics:<br />

four (4) math credits, two (2) of which must be<br />

either Math 2204 or Math 2205; <strong>and</strong> two (2)<br />

credits from either 3204* or 3205<br />

*a minimum of 60% must be achieved in<br />

this course<br />

English: two (2) credits from English 3201<br />

Science:<br />

four (4) credits, two (2) of which must be from<br />

either Biology 3201, or Chemistry 3202, or<br />

Physics 3204 or Earth Systems 3209<br />

2.9.3 High School Graduates - Grade 11 Public<br />

Examination Matriculation Certificate<br />

A Grade 11 Matriculation Certificate with a minimum average of 60%<br />

in the required courses.<br />

2.9.4 Adult Basic Education<br />

Completion of Level III Adult Basic Education (A.B.E.) in the<br />

following Department of Education approved courses with a<br />

minimum of a 60% average in each of the following three areas:<br />

Mathematics: 2104A, 2104B, 2104C <strong>and</strong> 3104A, 3104B,<br />

3104C<br />

English:<br />

Science:<br />

3101A, 3101B, 3101C<br />

six (6) credits three (3) of which must be from<br />

either Biology 3101A, 3101B, 3101C OR<br />

Chemistry 3102A, 3102B, 3102C OR<br />

Physics 3104A, 3104B, 3104C OR<br />

Geology IS 3212<br />

Adult Basic Education courses are offered at the College of the<br />

North Atlantic <strong>and</strong> at approved private training institutions.<br />

Applicants may obtain further information concerning the Adult<br />

Basic Education program from these organizations.<br />

2.9.5 Applicants from Outside Newfoundl<strong>and</strong><br />

Individuals from outside Newfoundl<strong>and</strong> seeking admission to any<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Joint Diploma/Degree, Diploma of Technology or<br />

Technician Diploma program are required to have graduated from<br />

Grade XII in the University Preparatory Program (the Secondary<br />

V Certificate for Quebec applicants) with a passing mark in the<br />

required courses <strong>and</strong> an overall average of no less than 60% in<br />

these courses.<br />

2.9.6 International Students Entering Transport Canada<br />

Approved Programs<br />

Transport Canada examination <strong>and</strong> certification of seafarers<br />

is available only to Canadian Citizens <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>ed immigrants.<br />

International students completing these programs at the <strong>Marine</strong><br />

<strong>Institute</strong> will receive a Diploma of Technology from the <strong>Marine</strong><br />

<strong>Institute</strong> but they will have to write their certificate examinations<br />

in their own country.<br />

Many programs at the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> include, in addition<br />

to classroom instruction, work terms which are compulsory<br />

components of the programs <strong>and</strong> are necessary in order to fulfill<br />

graduation requirements.<br />

International students are responsible for finding their own work<br />

terms in their home country, <strong>and</strong> these work terms must be<br />

approved by the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Placement Office.<br />

2.10 Technical Certificate Programs<br />

** Please refer to regulations governing physical<br />

requirements as listed in this calendar.<br />

2.10.1 Aquaculture<br />

Applicants should possess the equivalent of Grade 9 education<br />

or appropriate education <strong>and</strong>/or industry experience acceptable<br />

to the Admissions Committee<br />

2.10.2 Bridge Watch**<br />

C<strong>and</strong>idates for admission to the Technical Certificate - Bridge<br />

Watch Program must have successfully completed, at a<br />

minimum, Grade Eight (8). Proof of physical fitness must be<br />

provided by way of a signed Seafarer’s medical <strong>and</strong> a <strong>Marine</strong><br />

Emergency Duties (MED) medical from an approved physician.<br />

As well, c<strong>and</strong>idates must submit a clear Certificate of Conduct (a<br />

certified criminal record check).<br />

2.10.3 Fire Rescue Program**<br />

C<strong>and</strong>idates for admission to the Technical Certificate - Fire<br />

Rescue Program must have completed, as a minimum, Level<br />

III high school Diploma. Upon acceptance to the program, all<br />

c<strong>and</strong>idates must pass a medical examination <strong>and</strong> submit a<br />

Certificate of Conduct from their Local Police Force. In addition<br />

c<strong>and</strong>idates must possess a Class 5 Driver’s License with an Air<br />

Brake Endorsement (Class 9 or equivalent).<br />
