SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS<br />

Dale Howse, Sterling Perham, <strong>and</strong> Richard Price<br />

<strong>Memorial</strong> Scholarship<br />

This scholarship in memory of three students is presented to a<br />

student enrolled in a technology program. Preference may be<br />

given to a student in the <strong>Marine</strong> Engineering program.<br />

The Chester <strong>and</strong> Maud Keeping <strong>Memorial</strong> Scholarship<br />

This scholarship, in memory of Chester <strong>and</strong> Maud Keeping who<br />

had a long association with both the marine <strong>and</strong> fishing industries<br />

<strong>and</strong> who valued education highly, is given to a student in either<br />

the second or third year of a technology program<br />

Keith R. Kirby Scholarship<br />

This scholarship, the yearly interest from a $5,000 trust fund,<br />

to be awarded annually to a deserving Intermediate Student<br />

in Nautical Science of high academic achievement <strong>and</strong> who is<br />

recommended as having a commitment to improving safety in the<br />

marine environment.<br />

The Labrador Scholarship<br />

The Labrador Scholarship, the interest from an award presented<br />

to the <strong>Institute</strong> by Northern Telecom for its distance education<br />

program in Labrador, is awarded annually to a student from<br />

Labrador who is enrolled in a three year technology program.<br />

Dr. Aidan Maloney Scholarship in <strong>Fisheries</strong> Resource<br />

Management<br />

The Dr. Aidan Maloney Scholarship in <strong>Fisheries</strong> (Resource<br />

Management) was established through a generous gift by Dr.<br />

Aidan Maloney, who served the fishery of Newfoundl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Labrador in both the private <strong>and</strong> public sectors for almost fifty<br />

years. The scholarship will be given annually to a full-time<br />

graduate student enrolled in the Master of <strong>Marine</strong> Studies –<br />

<strong>Fisheries</strong> Resource Management program at the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> Atlantic Scholarship<br />

A total of four scholarships shall be awarded each year. Two<br />

shall be given to students in either second or third year of<br />

Nautical Science program <strong>and</strong> two shall be given to students<br />

in either the second or third year of the <strong>Marine</strong> Engineering<br />

program. Recipients shall be residents of either Nova Scotia or<br />

Newfoundl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Labrador.<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Scholarship<br />

This scholarship may be awarded to students in any program<br />

eligible for scholarships.<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Science Fair Scholarships<br />

The <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> sponsors up to eight entrance scholarships<br />

to the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>. Up to two recipients may be selected<br />

from the Grade XI <strong>and</strong> XII entries in the senior division of each<br />

of the four Newfoundl<strong>and</strong> regional science fairs. Recipients<br />

must enroll in the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> in the next academic year<br />

following graduation from high school in order to claim the award.<br />

Application must be made prior to the commencement of judging.<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Student Union Scholarships<br />

The <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Student Union has established four<br />

scholarships which are awarded on the basis of academics <strong>and</strong><br />

involvement in student affairs.<br />

<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Sustainable Aquaculture Scholarship<br />

This scholarship is awarded to a student in the Advanced<br />

Diploma in Sustainable Aquaculture program <strong>and</strong> is based on<br />

academic performance in the first term.<br />

<strong>Memorial</strong> University Entrance Scholarships<br />

These scholarships are awarded to students entering the<br />

technology program based on high school academic performance.<br />

Middle Cove <strong>Memorial</strong> Scholarship<br />

This scholarship, established from the interest of an endowment<br />

by members of the Canadian Coast Guard in the Newfoundl<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> Maritime Regions in memory of three colleagues who lost<br />

their lives in the line of duty, is awarded annually to a second or<br />

third year student in Maritime Studies.<br />

EXXON/Mobil Oil Canada Scholarship<br />

This scholarship is awarded annually to a student with high<br />

academic performance.<br />

Captain Wilfred B. Morgan <strong>Memorial</strong> Scholarship<br />

Donated by his wife <strong>and</strong> children as a memorial to Captain<br />

Wilfred B. Morgan, Master <strong>Marine</strong>r, who served as a Master<br />

with C.N.R. <strong>and</strong> was a Master of the <strong>Institute</strong>’s M.V. Beinir, this<br />

scholarship is awarded annually to a Nautical Science student<br />

entering second year. Preference shall be given to a student from<br />

the Labrador coast.<br />

Ocean Choice International Scholarships (Entrance<br />

Scholarships)<br />

These scholarships are awarded annually to students entering<br />

the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />

Ocean Ranger Scholarships <strong>and</strong> Bursaries<br />

To commemorate the tragic loss of the 84 crew members of the<br />

Ocean Ranger on Feb. 15, 1982, a scholarship <strong>and</strong> bursary<br />

program has been established by the Ocean Ranger Disaster<br />

Fund. These awards, valued at $500.00 per year, are presented<br />

to students who are entering or pursuing a post-secondary<br />

program of studies. In selecting c<strong>and</strong>idates, preference will be<br />

given to the daughters, sons <strong>and</strong>/or widows of those who were<br />

lost. In the absence of eligible c<strong>and</strong>idates from this group, the<br />

scholarships <strong>and</strong> bursaries may be awarded to other students at<br />

the discretion of the Ocean Ranger Scholarship Committee.<br />

The Oil <strong>and</strong> Gas Week Scholarship<br />

This scholarship was established by the Oil <strong>and</strong> Gas Week<br />

Steering Committee in support of students in petroleum related<br />

programs. Based on scholarship st<strong>and</strong>ing, the scholarship will<br />

be awarded to a student beyond their first year of study, with<br />

preference given to students who graduated from a high school<br />

in Newfoundl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Labrador outside of the metropolitan St.<br />

John’s area. To be eligible, the student must be enrolled in<br />
