2.16 Credit Transfers <strong>and</strong> Challenge<br />

Examinations<br />

Students transferring from other colleges or universities, <strong>and</strong><br />

students with prior academic or work experience who feel they<br />

are eligible to earn credit from the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> for work<br />

completed towards the requirements of a <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong><br />

program, may apply to earn this credit through either an<br />

Application for Transfer of Course Credit or through a Challenge<br />

Examination. Please refer to the section of this calendar<br />

concerning <strong>Academic</strong> Policies <strong>and</strong> Procedures for an explanation<br />

of the policies, regulations <strong>and</strong> procedures governing transfers of<br />

credit <strong>and</strong> challenge examination.<br />

2.17 English Proficiency Requirements<br />

English is the primary language of instruction in programs<br />

offered at the <strong>Fisheries</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> of <strong>Memorial</strong><br />

University of Newfoundl<strong>and</strong>. Therefore, applicants seeking<br />

admission must possess an adequate knowledge of written<br />

<strong>and</strong> spoken English as a prerequisite to admission. Regardless<br />

of the country of origin or citizenship status, applicants will be<br />

required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. This<br />

demonstration will take one of the following forms:<br />

• Successful completion of the equivalent of full-time instruction<br />

in an English language secondary institution as recognized by<br />

the <strong>Fisheries</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> of <strong>Memorial</strong> University of<br />

Newfoundl<strong>and</strong> including successful completion of at least two<br />

courses in English language <strong>and</strong>/or literature at the Grade XII<br />

(or equivalent) level.<br />

Please note that these courses must be other than E.S.L.<br />

(English as a Second Language) courses.<br />

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)<br />

A minimum score of 550 is required on the paper-based test,<br />

or a minimum score of 213 on the computer-based test or a<br />

minimum score of 79-80 on the internet based test of the Test<br />

of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The official results<br />

of the TOEFL must be forwarded directly to the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong><br />

from the TOEFL Testing Centre. Applicants submitting a TOEFL<br />

score of less than 550 or 213 or 79-80 will be considered as<br />

not having met the English Language requirements of this<br />

institution <strong>and</strong> will not be admitted until English proficiency<br />

can be demonstrated. Information regarding TOEFL programs<br />

is available from the Educational Testing Service, Box 899,<br />

Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A., 08540, from U.S. Embassies<br />

<strong>and</strong> consulates, or from offices of the U.S. Information<br />

Services.<br />

• Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)<br />

A minimum score of 85 will be considered as having<br />

demonstrated English Language Proficiency for admission<br />

purposes only. The official results of the MELAB must be<br />

forwarded directly to the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> from the MELAB<br />

Testing Centre. Applicants submitting a Michigan English<br />

Language Assessment Battery with results of less than 85<br />

will be considered as not having met the English proficiency<br />

requirements of this institution <strong>and</strong> will not be admitted until<br />

proficiency in English can be demonstrated. Information on<br />

the Michigan Test of English may be obtained from the Testing<br />

<strong>and</strong> Certificate Division, University of Michigan, 2001 North<br />

University Building, Ann Arbour, Michigan, U.S.A.,48109-1057.<br />

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS)<br />

A minimum overall B<strong>and</strong> Score of 6.5, <strong>and</strong> a b<strong>and</strong> score of at<br />

least 6 on both the Writing B<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Reading B<strong>and</strong> are<br />

required. The official results of the IELTS must be forwarded<br />

directly to the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> from the IELTS Testing Centre.<br />

Applicants submitting an IELTS assessment with results of<br />

less than 6.5 on the Overall B<strong>and</strong> Score <strong>and</strong>/or a b<strong>and</strong> score<br />

of less than 6 on either the Writing <strong>and</strong>/or the Reading b<strong>and</strong>,<br />

will be considered as not having met the English proficiency<br />

requirements of this institution <strong>and</strong> will not be admitted until<br />

proficiency in English can be demonstrated. Information on<br />

the International English Language Testing System may be<br />

obtained from IELTS Inc., 100 East Corson Street, Suite 200,<br />

Pasadena, CA 91103, USA<br />

• The Canadian <strong>Academic</strong> English Language (CAEL)<br />

Assessment<br />

Minimum b<strong>and</strong> scores of between 50 <strong>and</strong> 60 in each of the<br />

four skills tested (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking), with<br />

at least two b<strong>and</strong> scores of 60 are the minimum requirements<br />

necessary for admission to the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>. The official<br />

results of the CAEL Assessment must be forwarded directly<br />

to the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> from the CAEL Assessment Centre.<br />

Applicants submitting a CAEL Assessment of less than 50<br />

in each of the four skills tested, <strong>and</strong>/or an assessment in<br />

which there are not at least two b<strong>and</strong> scores of at least 60,<br />

will be considered as not having met the English proficiency<br />

requirements of this institution <strong>and</strong> will not be admitted until<br />

proficiency in English can be demonstrated. Information<br />

pertaining to the Canadian <strong>Academic</strong> English Language<br />

(CAEL) Assessment may be obtained from:<br />

(CanTEST)<br />

Minimum b<strong>and</strong> scores of 4.5 in the listening comprehension<br />

<strong>and</strong> reading comprehension sub-tests <strong>and</strong> a score of 4<br />

in writing are required to satisfy <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> English<br />

proficiency requirements. The official results of the CanTEST<br />

must be forwarded directly to the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> from the<br />

CanTEST Testing Centre. Applicants submitting a CanTEST<br />

test assessment with b<strong>and</strong> scores of less than 4.5 in the<br />

listening comprehension <strong>and</strong> reading comprehension subtests<br />

<strong>and</strong> a score of less than 4 in writing, will be considered<br />

as not having met the English proficiency requirements of this<br />

institution <strong>and</strong> will not be admitted until proficiency in English<br />
