ABC’S OF ON-CAMPUS SERVICES<br />

• The processing of changes of address for students.<br />

• The evaluation of deferred <strong>and</strong> supplementary examination<br />

applications.<br />

• The coordination <strong>and</strong> supervision of final examinations<br />

including deferred <strong>and</strong> supplementary examinations.<br />

• The receipt <strong>and</strong> coordination of challenge examination applications.<br />

• The coordination of the review of, <strong>and</strong> response to, student<br />

academic appeals.<br />

• The coordination of the <strong>Institute</strong>’s response to reports of<br />

academic misconduct.<br />

• The coordination of enrollment for Transport Canada<br />

certification training.<br />

• The receipt, processing <strong>and</strong> reporting of end of term grades.<br />

• The provision of official student transcripts.<br />

• The receipt <strong>and</strong> evaluation of applications for graduation.<br />

• The provision of student certificates <strong>and</strong> diplomas upon<br />

verification of completion of program requirements.<br />

PARKING<br />

Students who wish to park on campus must obtain a parking<br />

permit. Parking permits will be sold during registration <strong>and</strong><br />

may be purchased after registration at the Cashier’s Office.<br />

All students must complete an Application for Parking Permit<br />

form which is available on line. <strong>Memorial</strong> University parking<br />

regulations apply to the <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>and</strong> students are advised to<br />

obtain a copy from Security or <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>and</strong> Technical Services.<br />

Tickets are issued for traffic <strong>and</strong> parking violations <strong>and</strong> must be<br />

paid at the Provincial Traffic Court.<br />

RECREATION AND FITNESS<br />

A large, well-equipped, modern gymnasium, exercise room,<br />

weight room, change <strong>and</strong> shower rooms are available for physical<br />

<strong>and</strong> recreational activity.<br />

There is a wide variety of intramural activities for both students<br />

<strong>and</strong> staff. These activities include softball, floor hockey,<br />

basketball <strong>and</strong> volleyball.<br />

Information about these activities is available from the the Health<br />

<strong>and</strong> Wellness Coordinator.<br />

SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS<br />

The <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> does offer support services for students with<br />

special needs in accordance with <strong>Memorial</strong> University’s Policy<br />

Accommodations for Students with Disabilities. Students should<br />

discuss their needs with Student Affairs personnel prior to the<br />

start of a term so services can be in place when the term starts.<br />

Appropriate documentation is required in order to avail of support<br />

services.<br />

STUDENT AFFAIRS<br />

Student Affairs offers services for students <strong>and</strong> prospective<br />

students. Services offered include:<br />

• <strong>Academic</strong> <strong>and</strong> personal support<br />

• Career, student aid, <strong>and</strong> scholarship information<br />

• Transition <strong>and</strong> engagement programming<br />

• Advising <strong>and</strong> assisting Student Council <strong>and</strong> other student<br />

groups on campus.<br />

• Consulting with outside agencies regarding <strong>Institute</strong> programs.<br />

• Advising individuals who may be interested in attending the<br />

<strong>Institute</strong>.<br />

STUDENT PLACEMENT<br />

The main function of the Placement Office is coordinating student<br />

work term employment in various programs offered by the <strong>Marine</strong><br />

<strong>Institute</strong>. As well, additional services are offered to students <strong>and</strong><br />

graduates through the Placement Office which include:<br />

• Job Posting - Individual jobs are posted on a bulletin board.<br />

• Resume Referral Service - Resumes of qualified c<strong>and</strong>idates<br />

are collected <strong>and</strong> forwarded to the employers.<br />

• On Campus Recruitment - Office space <strong>and</strong> board rooms are<br />

available to employers who wish to conduct interviews with<br />

students on campus.<br />

• Employment Programs - Information on student <strong>and</strong> employer<br />

subsidy programs is available.<br />

• Employer Database - A database of companies employing<br />

<strong>Institute</strong> graduates/students is maintained.<br />

• Employer Resource Files - An employer file containing<br />

company information, annual reports, <strong>and</strong> applications for<br />

employment is available.<br />

• Resume File - An up-to-date file of student <strong>and</strong> graduate<br />

resumes are made available to employers.<br />

• Job Search Techniques - Students are assisted with cover<br />

letters, interview techniques, <strong>and</strong> resume preparation.<br />

• Program Promotion - <strong>Institute</strong> programs are promoted to<br />

employers <strong>and</strong> graduate <strong>and</strong> work term placements are sought.<br />

The following policies <strong>and</strong> procedures apply to the recreational<br />

facility:<br />

• Only non-marking shoes will be permitted on gym floor.<br />

• Equipment must be returned to office when group is finished.<br />

• Any abuse of facility or equipment will not be tolerated.<br />

• Student I.D. must be presented in order to use facility<br />

equipment.<br />
