FISHERIES AND MARINE INSTITUTE OVERVIEW<br />

INDUSTRIAL RESPONSE AND DEVELOPMENT<br />

The <strong>Institute</strong> undertakes applied research <strong>and</strong> engages in<br />

technology transfer <strong>and</strong> training for our client industries through a<br />

number of specialized Centres.<br />

Centres<br />

A number of Centres operate within each of the three schools<br />

of the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>, namely the Offshore Safety <strong>and</strong><br />

Survival Centre, the Centre for <strong>Marine</strong> Simulation, the Centre<br />

for Sustainable Aquatic Resources, the Centre for <strong>Fisheries</strong><br />

Ecosystems Research, the Centre for Aquaculture <strong>and</strong> Seafood<br />

Development <strong>and</strong> the Centre for Applied Ocean Technology.<br />

These are more fully described in the paragraphs under the<br />

headings for each of the three schools.<br />

Affiliated Centre<br />

Associated with the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> is an arms-length research<br />

<strong>and</strong> development organization.<br />

Canadian Centre For <strong>Fisheries</strong> Innovation (CCFI)<br />

The Canadian Centre for <strong>Fisheries</strong> Innovation (CCFI), founded<br />

in 1989, as a corporate joint initiative of the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Memorial</strong> University, provides scientific services to the<br />

aquaculture <strong>and</strong> fish harvesting <strong>and</strong> processing industries.<br />

OFFICE OF THE VICE-PRESIDENT<br />

The vice-president of <strong>Memorial</strong> University (<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>) is<br />

primarily responsible for the operations of the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />

The vice-president of <strong>Memorial</strong> University (<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>)<br />

reports directly to the president <strong>and</strong> works in close collaboration<br />

with the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s Executive Committee, as well as the<br />

other vice-presidents <strong>and</strong> members of the senior management<br />

team of <strong>Memorial</strong> University. The Office of the Vice-President<br />

includes:<br />

FACILITIES<br />

The <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s main campus is located in St. John’s,<br />

within Pippy Park. It consists of classrooms <strong>and</strong> technical<br />

laboratories in support of its Programs, a flume tank, licensed<br />

seafood processing plant, simulation facilities <strong>and</strong> a freshwater<br />

aquaculture <strong>and</strong> research <strong>and</strong> development facilities.<br />

The <strong>Institute</strong>’s Offshore <strong>and</strong> Safety <strong>and</strong> Survival Centre is located<br />

in Foxtrap, located 30 km from the <strong>Institute</strong>’s main campus. This<br />

training facility includes an international class marine fire fighting<br />

unit, a survival tank with environmental simulation capabilities,<br />

a helicopter underwater escape trainer <strong>and</strong> simulated ship<br />

structure which provides a practical experience in controlling <strong>and</strong><br />

tinguishing all types of shipboard fires.<br />

The <strong>Institute</strong> operates a marine base at the Southside of St.<br />

John’s harbor where its vessels are moored <strong>and</strong> serves as a<br />

base of operations for practical survival training.<br />

The <strong>Institute</strong>’s newest facility is the Holyrood <strong>Marine</strong> Base,<br />

located in Holyrood. The <strong>Marine</strong> Base is Phase I of a three phase<br />

development; the current facility houses the Centre for Applied<br />

Ocean Technology (CTec) classroom <strong>and</strong> office space; electrical<br />

<strong>and</strong> mechanical laboratories; a wet gear change, wash-down<br />

<strong>and</strong> drying area for diving <strong>and</strong> safety <strong>and</strong> survival operations;<br />

<strong>and</strong> equipment storage. Planning is underway for subsequent<br />

development of the <strong>Marine</strong> Base.<br />

In addition to facilities in St. John’s <strong>and</strong> surrounding area the<br />

<strong>Institute</strong> operates the Safety <strong>and</strong> Emergency Response Training<br />

(SERT) Centre located in Stephenville, which offers training<br />

courses in aviation, marine <strong>and</strong> industrial safety <strong>and</strong> emergency<br />

response.<br />

MI International<br />

MI International is the focal point for international programs <strong>and</strong><br />

activities of the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>. The unit brings an international<br />

dimension to the <strong>Institute</strong>, while enhancing the province’s export<br />

capability, by participating in international development projects<br />

<strong>and</strong> establishing linkages with other institutions around the world.<br />

Department of Development <strong>and</strong> Engagement<br />

The Department of Development <strong>and</strong> Engagement is responsible<br />

for business development, major strategic projects, government<br />

relations, aboriginal affairs <strong>and</strong> related activities. In addition, the<br />

Department also oversees Regional Engagement, Alumni Affairs<br />

<strong>and</strong> Development.<br />

Quality Office<br />

The <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s Quality Office oversees the management<br />

of the <strong>Institute</strong>’s quality system. The <strong>Institute</strong>’s quality system has<br />

been registered to the ISO 9001:1994 st<strong>and</strong>ard since 2001, <strong>and</strong><br />

since that time has maintained this st<strong>and</strong>ard. The Quality System<br />

has provided an umbrella under which all of the core processes,<br />

support processes <strong>and</strong> regulatory requirements as well as the<br />

accreditation agencies’ requirements have been brought together.<br />
