ABC’S OF ON-CAMPUS SERVICES<br />
HEALTH INSURANCE<br />
There are two health <strong>and</strong> dental plans for students, one for<br />
Canadian students <strong>and</strong> the other for international students.<br />
Students are normally covered under one or the other plan but<br />
not both.<br />
Canadian Students<br />
The <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> Students’ Union (MISU) offers students a<br />
health care plan which covers a portion of the cost of prescription<br />
drugs, dental services, eyeglass expense <strong>and</strong> other medical<br />
services. Participation in the plan is compulsory <strong>and</strong> fees are due<br />
at the time of registration. A family plan is available on request.<br />
A detailed description of the plans is available from the Student<br />
Council.<br />
Students who are covered under a similar plan held by a parent<br />
or spouse may opt out of the plan by visiting the website at<br />
http://studentplans.ca/u/18. The opt out deadline for any given<br />
academic term is two weeks after the first day of lectures.<br />
International Students<br />
International students may be eligible for coverage through the<br />
provincial health care plan, MCP. Students should contact the<br />
International Student Advisor located in Corte Real, Room 1000A<br />
on the St. John’s campus.<br />
THE HELP CENTRE<br />
The Help Centre, at W3023, provides academic support services.<br />
It is staffed by faculty who are able to offer assistance on an<br />
individual or small group basis. Students may be referred to the<br />
Centre by an instructor or they may drop in according to the<br />
course specific schedule.<br />
HOUSING<br />
<strong>Memorial</strong> University’s Department of Housing, Food, &<br />
Conference services provides both on-campus <strong>and</strong> off-campus<br />
housing solutions for students of <strong>Memorial</strong> University, students<br />
on the St. John`s campus <strong>and</strong> those studying at the <strong>Marine</strong><br />
<strong>Institute</strong>.<br />
On Campus<br />
<strong>Institute</strong> students may in residence on <strong>Memorial</strong>’s main campus<br />
located about three kilometers from the <strong>Institute</strong>. Students are<br />
able to avail of traditional residence hall dormitory style housing<br />
in Paton College or apartment style residences in Burton’s Pond.<br />
Both residence facilities are serviced by the city’s transportation<br />
system.<br />

<strong>Memorial</strong> University’s Off-Campus Housing Office can help<br />
students find off-campus housing in <strong>and</strong> around the St.John’s<br />
area. As a convenience to students, the Office also maintains<br />
a directory of rental properties. Please note that the properties<br />
listed in the directory are neither endorsed nor approved by<br />
Housing, Food, & Conference Services.<br />
DR. C.R. BARRETT LIBRARY<br />
The Dr. C.R. Barrett Library is located on the main floor of the<br />
<strong>Fisheries</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>. It offers a comprehensive range of<br />
research material to students, faculty, <strong>and</strong> staff at the <strong>Fisheries</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Engineering Technology Centre<br />
of the College of the North Atlantic, <strong>and</strong> to the Newfoundl<strong>and</strong><br />
marine industries.<br />
The library collection supports study <strong>and</strong> research in <strong>Fisheries</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> aquaculture, marine technologies, nautical science, <strong>and</strong> the<br />
ocean environment. The collection includes significant holdings in<br />
engineering technology.<br />
The Dr. C.R. Barrett Library homepage http://www.library.mun.<br />
ca/mi/index.php provides access to all in-library <strong>and</strong> electronic<br />
books, journals, media based materials <strong>and</strong> library research<br />
resources <strong>and</strong> services available to the <strong>Memorial</strong> University<br />
community. Also available are <strong>Marine</strong> Topics web pages where<br />
library staff has aligned library resources to <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong><br />
programs of study <strong>and</strong> research centres.<br />
Library staff are available for consultation either in-person or via<br />
the chat feature located on the library home page.<br />
LOCKERS<br />
Lockers are available to students at a cost of $20.00 per year. At<br />
the end of the school year students are required to return their<br />
locks at which time they will receive a $10.00 refund. Failure to<br />
return locks will result in loss of the $10.00 refundable deposit.<br />
Locker rentals are available in the Bookstore.<br />
OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR<br />
The Office of the Registrar provides a variety of services to<br />
support the development of students at the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>. The<br />
primary role of this office is to interpret, uphold <strong>and</strong> contribute to<br />
the development of the academic policies <strong>and</strong> regulations of the<br />
<strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>; to coordinate the admission <strong>and</strong> enrollment of<br />
students at the <strong>Institute</strong>; to provide information regarding <strong>Institute</strong><br />
programs, policies <strong>and</strong> regulations <strong>and</strong> courses to applicants,<br />
students <strong>and</strong> others; <strong>and</strong> to receive, process, manage <strong>and</strong> report<br />
all student <strong>and</strong> academic records relating to <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong><br />
programs <strong>and</strong> students.<br />
This office provides the following services:<br />
• The production <strong>and</strong> distribution of the <strong>Institute</strong> calendar <strong>and</strong><br />
program information brochures.<br />
• The application <strong>and</strong> interpretation of <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> academic<br />
policies, regulations <strong>and</strong> procedures.<br />
• The provision, receipt, review of, <strong>and</strong> response to, applications<br />
for admission for all <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> programs.<br />
• The receipt <strong>and</strong> coordination of applications for transfer of<br />
credit from other institutions to the <strong>Marine</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>.<br />
• Registration for students in programs <strong>and</strong> courses.<br />
• The receipt <strong>and</strong> coordination of Course Audit applications.<br />
• The provision <strong>and</strong> updating of student identification cards.<br />
• The receipt <strong>and</strong> processing of changes to student registration<br />
information including course changes <strong>and</strong> student withdrawals.<br />
