COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />

Safety Directorate. Without this sea experience the student<br />

cannot graduate.<br />

Prerequisites - WKTM 1102 (Sea Phase 1) <strong>and</strong> all Technical<br />

Session 2 courses which include: NASC 3101 (Navigation Safety<br />

- Collision Regulations); NASC 2107 (Restricted Operator’s<br />

Certificate - Maritime Commercial); <strong>and</strong> NASC 2201 (Basic<br />

Tanker Safety)<br />

WKTM 2103 (Work Term II - <strong>Marine</strong> Engineering)<br />

WKTM 2103 is designed to ensure that the student gains<br />

practical experience under Option 1 or Option 2. Under Option 1<br />

students continue development of the competency requirements<br />

of a Ship’s Engineering Officer; under Option 2 students gain<br />

additional <strong>Marine</strong> Engineering Technologist practical experience.<br />

Each successfully completed work term is regarded as one<br />

course credit.<br />

To meet the requirements for graduation from the <strong>Marine</strong><br />

Engineering Diploma of Technology Program, the student must<br />

successfully complete a total of three (3) work terms.<br />

Prerequisites - A valid seafarer’s medical certificate is required<br />

for Option 1. In addition, the student must have successfully<br />

completed the following courses before acceptance in approved<br />

work terms:<br />

MREK 3106 (<strong>Marine</strong> Engineering Knowledge III); WKPR<br />

3101(Machinery Maintenance I); WKTM 1103 (Work Term I)<br />

Duration - Option 1: Students must complete a minimum of 70<br />

days of Transport Canada certified sea time <strong>and</strong> achieve the<br />

articulated evaluation in order to meet WKTM 2103 requirements.<br />

Option 2: Students complete a minimum 10-week work term in<br />

marine related, shore-based companies.<br />

WKTM 2106 (Work Term - <strong>Marine</strong> Environmental)<br />

The work term provides students with an opportunity to learn,<br />

develop, <strong>and</strong> practice high st<strong>and</strong>ards of professional behaviour<br />

<strong>and</strong> performance while in the work environment.<br />

WKTM 2106 (Work Term - <strong>Marine</strong> Environmental Technology)<br />

Prerequisites -WKTM 1002 (Work Term Preparation Seminar);<br />

MENV 2100 (<strong>Marine</strong> Environmental); All Technical Session 1<br />

Courses; All Term 4 courses<br />

Duration - 8 weeks<br />

(Students are available from mid-May to the end of August)<br />

WKTM 2107 (Work Term - Food Technology)<br />

The work term provides students with an opportunity to learn,<br />

develop, <strong>and</strong> practice high st<strong>and</strong>ards of professional behaviour<br />

<strong>and</strong> performance while in the work environment.<br />

Prerequisites - Clear St<strong>and</strong>ing (CL) or better in the academic<br />

semester immediately prior to the work term semester.<br />

WKTM 1002 (Work Term Preparation Seminar); MATH 1101<br />

(Introduction to Calculus); FDTE 2112 (Food Sanitation); BIOL<br />

2102 (Microbiology) or BIOL 2105 (Microbiology)<br />

Duration - 8 weeks<br />

(Students are available from mid-May to the end of August)<br />

WKTM 3103 (Work Term III - <strong>Marine</strong> Engineering)<br />

WKTM 3103 is designed to ensure that the student gains<br />

practical experience under Option 1 or Option 2. Under Option 1<br />

Prerequisites - WKTM 2106 AND all courses listed in:<br />

Technical Sessions I <strong>and</strong> II <strong>and</strong> Terms 5 <strong>and</strong> 6<br />

NOTE: The appropriateness of the professional orientation<br />

placement will be determined by the Placement Officer in<br />

consultation with the Program Chair.<br />

WKTM 3301 (Work Term - Food Technology)<br />

This work term is intended to provide students with a second<br />

opportunity to learn, develop, <strong>and</strong> practice high st<strong>and</strong>ards of<br />

professional behaviour <strong>and</strong> performance while in the work<br />

environment.<br />

WKTM 3301 (Work Term – Food Technology)<br />

Prerequisites - Clear st<strong>and</strong>ing (CL) or better in the academic<br />

semester immediately prior to the work term semester.<br />

WKTM 2107 (Work Term – Food Technology)<br />

Duration - 8 weeks (Students are available from early May to the<br />

end of August.)<br />

WKTM 3302 (Work Term - Bachelor of<br />

Technology - Ocean Mapping)<br />

This work term is designed to ensure that the Ocean Mapping<br />

student gains the practical <strong>and</strong> technical experience to become<br />

competent in the field of Ocean Mapping. Students will be<br />

expected to gain a full underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the acquisition, analysis,<br />

dissemination <strong>and</strong> management processes associated with<br />

ocean data through the utilization of marine surveying equipment,<br />

remote sensing technologies, geographic information systems<br />

<strong>and</strong> oceanographic instrumentation. Students are expected<br />

to observe, learn, develop <strong>and</strong> adopt the high st<strong>and</strong>ards of<br />

professionalism expected of an Ocean Mapping Graduate to<br />
