ADVANCED DIPLOMA - WATER QUALITY
PROGRAM ENTRY
Please refer to the Admissions Section of this Calendar.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
The program is comprised of two thirteen (13) week academic
terms, a six (6) week technical session and a thirteen (13) week
work term. The academic semester and technical session consist
of a balance of theory and practical applications through lectures,
discussion seminars, case studies, laboratory, field trips and
projects. The work term will involve students placed in pertinent
industries or agencies for practical work experience.
EVALUATION:
Students in Advanced Diplomas must obtain a passing grade of
65% or better in all program courses.
Students who have received a grade of less than 50% in any
course will be required to withdraw from the program.
Students who have received a grade less than 65% (but 50% or
greater) in more than one program course during a single term
will be required to withdraw from the program.
Students who have received a grade less than 65% (but 50%
or greater) in one program course will be permitted to remain in
the program, provided that course is retaken when offered and
passed with a grade of 65% or better. Only one such repeat will
be permitted per term. Failure to obtain a grade of 65% in the
repeated course shall lead to termination of a student’s program.
CAREERS
Graduates of this program are expected to avail of positions
in the private and public sectors as water quality specialists,
watershed managers and water inspectors. The Advanced
diploma is encouraged for individuals requiring skills
upgrading that currently work in the water and wastewater
fields that meet the minimum entrance requirements.
Bridging mechanisms may be available to permit entry to the
program if minimum requirements cannot be met.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Many areas throughout the world are facing a crisis over the supply and quality of drinking water, water for growing food, or that
used for manufacturing purposes. They also face an enhanced environmental responsibility requiring the treatment of wastewaters
from all types of process. The Marine Institute’s Advanced Diploma in Water Quality is the only post-graduate program of its kind in
Atlantic Canada that focuses on the study of water and wastewater.
Students in this program will gain an appreciation of the complexities of marine systems and watershed management and the
role of technology in managing water resources. They will also gain an understanding of the wastewater process science and
technology employed in industrial and municipal areas.
The focus of the program will not be confined to the treatment of drinking water but will also include waters used in the processing
industry, the marine sector, coastal habitats and wastewaters produced in industrial and municipal areas. The goal is to provide
graduates with an understanding of the ecological issues affecting our water supplies and the knowledge to treat, maintain and use
our resources safety and efficiently in an environmentally conscientious manner.
