CHAPTER 13: Using Layout and Navigation Widgets CHAPTER 13: Using Layout and Navigation Widgets The Layout widgets let you group other widget-created elements together for layout on the page, and the Navigation widgets provide a way to navigate collections of elements. 5ml User's Guide About Layout and Navigation Widgets 5ml includes the following Layout and Navigation widgets you can use in your project: • Container widget: Creates a rectangular element for page layout that can hold other page elements. • HBox and VBox widgets: Create horizontal and vertical boxes for laying out page elements that automatically position the page elements within them. • Scroll View widget: Creates a rectangular window that provides additional viewing space in which you can view other page elements. The Scroll View widget provides a compact method for displaying elements that take up a lot of space, whether due to the size of the element or the number of the elements. In this way you can fit more elements or larger elements inside the Scroll View element than would otherwise fit into the space the Scroll View element takes up on the Canvas. The Scroll View element provides scroll bars that allow the user to scroll vertically and horizontally to view all the other elements within the window. • Tab Set widget: Creates a page element that holds sets of other elements and shows them one at a time. Users can navigate to each set by tapping tabs along the top of the Tab Set element -- similar to the way users click tabs at the top of a web page to see different "pages" of content. • View Set widget: Creates a page element that holds sets of other elements and shows each set one at a time. Users can navigate to the other sets by tapping dots along the bottom of the View Set element -- similar to the way users tap dots at the bottom of a mobile device's home screen to see different screens of content. The Layout and Navigation widgets let your group other page elements together, either as a collection of elements that are all visible on the page (such as in a Container, HBox, or VBox), or as sets of elements that users can navigate to by tabs (in a Tab Set) or dots (in a View Set). Click the Widgets tab at the top of the Library pane to show the Widgets pane in the Library. As shown in Figure 13-1 on page 311, you can then select Layout in the drop-down menu under the Widgets tab to see the Layout widgets, and select Navigation in the drop-down menu to see the Navigation widgets (or select All in the drop-down menu to see all widgets).
