Statice (Limonium latifolium) plants are utilized as a model to underst<strong>and</strong> metabolic adaptations to<br />

environmental stress. Synthetic pathway to the osmoprotectant beta-alanine betaine was discovered<br />

in this species <strong>and</strong> cDNA for beta-alanine N-methyltransferase involved in this pathway is utilized<br />

for metabolic engineering <strong>of</strong> crops for enhanced tolerance to salinity <strong>and</strong> drought (See Chapter 9).<br />
