Q How can <strong>the</strong> heterotic pattern be identified? What should be <strong>the</strong> base materials<br />

(testers)?<br />

A The heterotic patterns can be identified through several ways using special mating<br />

designs such as diallels, design-2 mating, etc. Once heterotic patterns <strong>of</strong> potentially useful<br />

materials are determined, <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong>n can be used as testers to determine <strong>the</strong>ir relationship with<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r materials.<br />

Q Breeding corn for industrial use, e.g. protein, oil, popping quality, sweet-corn, young<br />

ear corn, what will be your recommendations on breeding procedures?<br />

A Recurre~t selection procedures in general have been quite effective in increasing protein<br />

content and oil content. In o<strong>the</strong>r specialty corns such as popcorn and sweet corn, recurrent<br />

selections procedures will also be useful to correct deficiencies, provided populations are<br />

homozygous for gene(s) which control specialty. corn character. I have no experience with baby<br />

corn but would expect prolificacy, early maturity, along with hybrid development important<br />

considerations for economical reason and to have high uniformity.<br />
