The response to nitrogen fertilizer in maize is very high. Split applications <strong>of</strong> nitrogen,<br />

half as basal and <strong>the</strong> remaining half as a side dressing at <strong>the</strong> knee-high stage <strong>of</strong> maize have<br />

shown <strong>the</strong> highest yield potential. The use <strong>of</strong> 30-40 kg N/ha as side dressing at <strong>the</strong> knee-high<br />

stage With sufficient quantity <strong>of</strong> FYM/compost as basal applications is useful to maize for<br />

rainfed conditions.<br />

The yield response <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> improved varieties with <strong>the</strong> same agronomic production practices<br />

(improved/farmer) is comparatively higher than local varieties in farmer's fields.<br />
